## Description

The opaque white UHMW sheet has a standard tolerance and meets American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM D4020 specifications. UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) polyethylene is an impact-, chemical-, and moisture-resistant plastic that has excellent abrasion resistance and a low-friction surface. UHMW is more rigid than LDPE and HDPE, and has better abrasion resistance than PTFE.Plastic refers to a group of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials that have been engineered to achieve specific properties. The most notable characteristics of plastics are its low weight, machinability, corrosion resistance, and typically good thermal and electrical insulating properties. Certain plastic grades also offer optical transparency similar to glass, low-friction or self-lubricating surfaces, and exceptional impact resistance. Depending on their properties, certain plastic grades can be used as alternatives to metal, glass, and ceramic. Review: 1/4" very tough material, perfect for my projects - This 12" x 12" sheet came with slick surfaces front and back. (I don't care, but wanted to mention it for anyone expecting a matte or textured surface.) This is very tough material. Before I started my project (linkage guard for off-road motorcycle/high-impact application), I took it out back and put it on top of a cinder block, then used a hammer to attempt to break off a 1" corner section. It didn't flinch at all, and mind you this is only 1/4" thick. It did eventually bend a little after repeated pounding but no sign of cracking, splintering or breakage. When I tried to cut it with a hack saw, it fought me hard. I'll have to borrow my buddy's band saw to get the cuts I need without pulling a muscle.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this product good a non marring application? The two pieces of steel need to be seperated so they can slide without scratching the coating.**
A: In order to act as a bearing material between two pieces of steel, speeds will need to be relatively low so there is not heat build up. If the steel is coated, that coating will need to be durable too, paint would wear through in time, but wear should all but cease when the smooth steel is rubbing on UHMW PE. In this regard it will behave similarly to nylon or Delrin but will last much longer.

**Q: what is the melting point can it hold a skillet on top of it after coming off the stove without melting?**
A: Wrong application for UHMW-PE, with a 280 F melting, 180 F operating, way too low for your use - and certainly not the most cost effective solution. Use a silicone rubber pad instead. Less expensive and working temperature of 570 F + or -.

**Q: Would a 1/8 inch thick strip be flexible enough to wrap around the edge of a 2 foot diameter circle?**
A: Should work. The only problem area would be the butted or overlapped ends. The plastic does not stay bent on its own. The ends may not lay flat. Not knowing your design considerations, you may wish to factor that in if a perfect arc is needed for the entire length (circumference).

**Q: Aare all surfaces smooth and without saw marks?**
A: The top and bottoms on my purchases were clear. The edges were rough.
