So the ends of that magic arm are inserted into the bottom, tightened, and used to apply this clamp/arm assembly to whatever. Keeping in mind that I can only speak for Manfrotto arms, as I don't own any 'knock-offs' in which to gauge a better response to you. If I've not answered you in a way that helps, please re-phrase your question so that I can better help you out.(there is a 1/4 - 20 hole on the bottom of this clamp also suitable for that size MALE screw-in) **Q: does it come with a wedge and can i mount a camera directly to the stud?** A: I'm not sure what you mean by a "wedge". But the camera will mount directly to the stud.
