Review: Warm and light - I was hoping this would be ideal for me and it was, the weather wasn't cold or anything but compared to the actual ground when wild camping this sheet was surprisingly very comfortable. I love wild hiking and camping and can pretty much sleep anywhere even if there are rocks and a puddle under me. I was expecting with the indented bubbles on the Matt it would be a little hard and lumpy but it was surprisingly very comfortable to lie on. For your average UK weather this sleeping mat is fine, if you are going to be camping in winter definitely use it as an under mat and use with an appropriate R rated one. You can instantly tell the difference between having this sheet than not having it and is very light. I also didn't throw the plastic cover it comes with since it's extra protect from rain since it has to be carried outside the backpack and it's easy to place it back in this plastic bag. Not sure if a backpack would cover it however but just be responsible with waterproofing all your warm clothing etc. Great mat, can't see me exchanging it other than using an air mat for winter use with this probably used as an under mat as previously stated. I'll give a guarded yes, but it is best to read the explanation below to understand better. A thermal insulator restricts heat flow from one heat source at a temperature to another at another temperature. The 'ground' might be a cold 50F, and the objective is to restrict the flow of heat from your body, wanting to stay 98.6F. Your clothing acts as insulation, your sleeping bag adds even more with its down or synthetic fill, and your sleeping pad acts to insulate you a bit more. All of these 'restrict' loss of heat from your body. If the total of the 'R' values is too great, your body, acting as a heat source, gets 'hot' and wants to shed heat, first by sweating, then by forcing you to unzip the bag and vent heat. If the total of these 'R' values is too small, your skin temperature drops as body heat flows away to the ground (or cold air), and you first begin to feel cold, then shiver to generate more body heat. Now if the outside temp or air temp is HOT, that's a more usual situation to be concerned about. Let's say were out doors or indoors and the temperature is over 110F. In the context of a sleeping pad and camping, it would mean we have shed the sleeping bag, we have minimal clothing on, we're still sweating, and we're hoping for a breeze to evaporate sweat from our skin to cool our body from the oppressive heat. With respect to a pad like this, we definitely DON'T want to sleep on the reflective side, since that silvered side does reflect some of our body infrared heat back to us, but instead lay on the other side, the yellow pad - that side only acts as a foam cushion for our body. Unfortunately, it does not absorb our sweat, so it feels uncomfortable, not allowing our sweaty body to evaporate the sweat to cool us in any way. So, for example, if we were laying on our pad, yellow side up on a surface at 110F, it would help keep us cooler (at our 98.6F), but we'd still be very uncomfortable laying on that pad, and in that hot air all around. Unfortunately, in a situation where the air temperature is 110F, the best use of this pad to keep your body cooler would be to have someone fan you with the pad to evaporate the sweat on your skin to cool you down. Now if we were hiking in a thermally active area, and we found the ground temperature to be like 150F - really HOT, but not hot enough to 'melt' the pad - we could sit on an insulating pad like this, maybe only opening it to double its folded accordion size to use as a seat, and then the R value would be much higher that way, maybe 5X greater, and you'd find you could sit on that pad setting on the 150F 'ground', and not 'burn' your bottom. If you just laid the pad out normally, you'd find it helped, but not enough not to feel the heat - in that case the 'R' value is just too low to help enough to restrict the heat from the super hot ground to your bottom. You could also cut up this pad or any closed cell pad of 1/2" to 1", and use it as a 'hot pad' to help you pick up a pot of boiling water without burning your hands... in a similar way, you could wrap that pot of boiling water with the pad to keep it hot longer (acting like a Kozy) or with an ice cold drink to keep it cold longer. Remember, however, that the 'R' value isn't that high, and that the pad is only 'restricting' the flow of heat to some degree, so little by little your hands would begin to feel the heat of the hot water. I give it 10/10 and have just ordered another fir my partner. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Light weight is its main advantage *by R***S on 25 July 2016* I'll write this as a comparison with a point of reference I have, which is a Vango Trek 3 Standard, a cheap self-inflating mat that I had before. I spent this afternoon lying on both side-by-side in my tent... Thermarest advantages: - half the weight (410 vs 841) - slightly quicker to roll out - quicker to put away - no chance of getting punctures - can use as a small seat in folded form Vango advantages: - much comfier - packs much smaller - half the price - smooth surface, so you can turn easily in your mummy sleeping bag I can't comment on relative thermal insulation, since I haven't been able to compare them in cold conditions. This model is a good option if you want a light, reliable pad for long-distance hiking. On the other hand, if you're not moving around a lot, so weight and packing time aren't important, the Vango is much more comfortable, and cheaper. I'm going away on a long trip and I'm really tempted to take the Vango: it's so comfortable that you can really look forward to lying on it at the end of the day. The Thermarest isn't uncomfortable, it's just not actively comfortable in the same way. You get used to what you have though, and I'll probably end up taking the Thermarest just for its weight-saving. You can get really light blow-ups as well, but they're very expensive. I'd also consider the thick roll-up mats you can get from Decathlon for £10. They weigh about the same as the Thermarest, and roll up to a similar size. There's also an even lighter and thinner version for £5. edit: I did take this Thermarest, and it worked quite well in keeping me warm, though it was pretty uncomfortable on hard surfaces, making it hard to sleep. The silver surface wore off quickly revealing grey foam underneath, but this didn't seem to affect performance. I did find it difficult to turn during the night, as I found I had to do several times per hour, because the lumpy surface grips your sleeping bag. So if you have your sleeping bag hood over your head, it's hard to keep your face outwards. I ended up leaving the hood loose and facing downward, and turning my body within the sleeping bag, rather than turning the whole bag. Not ideal.
