What Baylor is doing with this series is highly praiseworthy in itself, giving pastors a reference and aid in more complicated areas of Greek that they might have only been able to look at on a surface level in seminary. The primary focus of the series is on syntax and semantics, which makes it quite unique. The commentary definitely requires some knowledge of Greek in order for it to be most useful, but the information that it provides is accessible and understandable for those who are familiar with the language.Dr. Dubis argues in the commentary for his own syntactical and semantic interpretations of the text, often not only giving you the label but the reasoning behind it. He compares his arguments with the interpretations of others with great charity, noting the strengths of others' arguments while explaining thoroughly why he favors a certain label over all the rest.In addition, Dr. Dubis has done quite a bit of work on 1 Peter in the past. This means that, in this commentary, he has approached a text that is very familiar to him and that he has spent many years studying; his knowledge of the text shows.I was very excited when I first heard about this commentary and even more excited when I read it. I highly recommend it for pastors, translators, and commentators who are working on 1 Peter; it will be a tremendously helpful reference. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Another excellent volume in the BHGNT series *by D***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 25, 2011* I completely concur with the comments and recommendations of the previous reviewer. This is only the second in the series, so far, that is not written by Parsons or Culy, and it continues their work with the same level of academic excellence.In addition to being a superb analysis of syntax, grammar, and discourse, this work includes some of the more recent Greek and linguistic scholarship. Two in particular are notable. First, from Levinsohn and Runge, the concepts of "frames of reference" as focal points, or points of departure, in discourse analysis are very powerful for understanding emphasis and level of importance. Second is the idea that "'deponency' is a misguided label" and modern readers should make a concerted effort to grasp the true use of the middle voice in ancient Greek. Much of this discussion and philosophy derives from the work of Suzanne Kemmer.For those, like me, who are not familiar with these newer concepts, further reading and thought will be required, but that is the mark of good scholarly work in general.This was a tremendously interesting and informative book for me and I recommend it highly to anyone looking to improve their understanding and insight into Peter's epistle and New Testament Greek. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Useful for the student and pastor *by G***G on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 9, 2013* Dubis provides a very good summary of the greek text, word for word and clause for clause. Though he doesn't present all the possible options (and sometimes makes some odd exegetical decisions), he does treat every word with equal care, giving short insights while staying focused on the meat of the text. It was extremely helpful in my own exegesis of the Greek and allowed me to interact, not only with Dubis himself, but with the views and insights of other 1 Peter commentaries.
