Story: We have two stories going on here: the first is mainly focused on two objectives, that is, the GL Corps helping the Sinestro Corps to capture rogue SC members while helping them build their own power battery next to the Battery of Will. The other objective focuses on Hal and Kyle trying to locate Hope out there in the cosmos. They run into an old friend on a volcanic like world, Saint Walker! Together, they fight off the mound of misery and Walker lets us in on a bit more of the characterizations of Hal and Kyle. This whole mission seems to be for the purpose of using Saint Walker as an "antennae" to allow Kyle to use the powers of the white lantern to resurrect the blue lantern corps. I really liked the next part which eventually sees Kyle welcomed back into the GL Corps with his original costume (which I really like)! I don't know what this means for the white lantern though. The best part of the first arc in this book involves Guy Gardner in his pursuit of his chosen rogue Sinestro Corps member, Arkillo! Everything that happens between Gardner and Arkillo in this whole book is pure gold. I don't know how he does it, but Venditti consistently writes an awesome Guy Gardner. How great a writer he must be if he can make everyone's least favorite human GL possibly their new favorite! Rebirth has been making me a fan of Guy Gardner, something I would have laughed at in the past. He's tough, he's brave, and he's perhaps a little smarter than most people give him credit for. Venditti pulled no punches here. He didn't use a cop out or a deus ex machina. He came close with that last one, but he gave us a full on ringless Gardner vs. Arkillo fight, and there's so much to love about it as we see where Guy gains his will from. It's rather tragic, but knowing Gardner better through the flashbacks makes it easier to identify with him and his very relatable origin. What we get soon after is something that I want to say Venditti slightly pulled (in spirit only) from the aftermath of Marvel's Civil War. We get an almost Tony talking to dead Steve moment between Gardner and Arkillo and I have to say I found it moving. Perhaps the narrative had Gardner and Arkillo become "friends" a little too fast after Arkillo was intent on killing him so soon before. The second arc in this book involves Rip Hunter time traveling back to our present to warn John Stewart about the erasure of the GL Corps in his future by a time criminal who has come back with a darn good plan to insure the permanent rise of the Sinestro Corps. The two freshly allied Corps have to battle these prism creatures that cut through constructs, and which the Lantern Corps find their attacks to be completely useless against. Hal realizes that this entire scenario is actually his fault and heads off with Rip Hunter to confront the time criminal. The true origin of the mysterious time traveler is revealed and I was SHOCKED to discover his true identity! This really goes to show how mistakes in the past can shape the future, and how bad decisions have consequences that we must eventually deal with. Because of the basic good vs. evil themes going on here, and due to the theme of that last story here, I would recommend this title for children and early teens, though any adult can easily enjoy this. It's not necessarily written for kids, but it touches on themes that would benefit kids to read about like loyalty to friends, making friends out of enemies, and the consequences of bad decisions. Art: Once again headed up by two master craftsmen, Ethan van Sciver and Rafa Sandoval, this book looks freakin' fantastic!! There was one panel on one page where I really had to call into question Sandoval's penciling quality as proportion was wacky, but beyond that everything for the most part looks pretty good! One other penciler does most of the second arc and I can't remember his name, and his style isn't as refined as van Sciver's or Sandoval's, but he has a satisfactory level of craftsmanship. This book is still very vibrant and beautiful. There's a richness to the green here, but what else would you expect from this caliber of talent? Overall: Venditti keeps bringing me back with great cosmic adventure stories. He's really writing the next great GL epic! The one thing that Venditti needs to do now which I've never seen him do at DC is build up a title to a major storyline or a limited series like Blackest Night! Good read ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great art and story, newbie is now a life-long fan *by N***E on January 24, 2018* I just recently got into Super Hero comics. I had read Star Trek comics during the TNG era in the 1990s, DS9 and Starfleet Acadamy with Nog being my favorite and then very shortly in 2015 I tried the new Star Wars comics that were not to my taste. This new DC rebirth era is great and I have primarily read Superman, Green Lantern and Suicide Squad. I have lots more to read but this third volume of Green Lanterns is where the Hal Jordan (new to me) story kicks in and the combo of the art and the story catch me. I really look forward to buying some older stuff to learn more about the different lanterns and stuff because of this series.
