For users complaining it boils the water and then reduces the temperature, you are not using it correctly. If you want a drink based temperature you do not use the power button. There are 2 different on options for this device.There are a few cons that have dropped this to 4.1) difficult to clean due to the lid2) you cannot power it off if it is not on the base3) if using a drink setting it will stay on for 6 hours by design, which is to long imo. I'd grown up with electric kettles, albeit before the advent of cordless units, and the thought of yet another item on the counter seemed silly. But I'm a manly man, and am willing to admit when I'm wrong: I've been known to read the directions, and even admit when I'm lost (well, if I ever got lost, I would. really).Anyway, I fell in love with the kettle. And it served me faithfully for a decade. But all good things must come to an end, and a couple of years ago, it started leaking slightly. I sealed it with some Goop, but it came back.After several iterations, I realized that it was time. So, very quietly (wouldn't want the kettle to learn that it was in danger of being replaced--that's the quickest path to a complete failure!), I started researching a replacement.Now, if that Krups were still available, I would have happily bought another. Surely it represented the pinnacle of kettle development! Alas, it was "Currently Unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."As anyone who has used Amazon for any length of time knows, the reviews are a blessing and a curse: the positive reviews are great, but the negative ones can be scary. And every kettle that had any aesthetic appeal had enough negative reviews to make me worry. So I mustered on, bearing the brunt of dealing with the leak.But then I got tired of fighting with the leak, and mentioned that I was thinking of replacing the Krups. And she suggested the Coctione. Despite its odd name, it looked OK. Sure, there were a few negatives, but they seemed to be outliers, and Mr. Chao was responding to them offering to make things right. So we took the plunge!Last week (finally he gets to the actual review, I hear you cry!) it arrived. And I read the manual (honest) and plugged it in (OK, maybe not in that order).This kettle rocks. It's fast, and it's *smart*, and in a good way, unlike many modern "conveniences": it Just Works, it's not intrusive. I get up, I fill it, I press Keep Warm twice for tea, and I don't touch the controls until I go to bed. Unlike the Krups, when I take the Coctione off the base to pour some water, it *stays on* when it's in Keep Warm mode. OK, not a big deal, but because it stays on, I don't have to remember to restart it. All day, I just pour, add water, and put it back. And it says "Hey, that's cold water!" and reheats ("goes blue": it lights up when it's in "heating" mode, which is neat) automatically.Note that the six-hour automatic timeout restarts each time you put the kettle back on the base. This means that if you get up at 8AM and make a cup of tea every couple of hours, it doesn't shut off at 2PM (yes, I did leave it alone for six hours to verify that my timeout was working at all!). That's good: the shutoff is there just as a safety mechanism. If it shut off a random six hours after the first button press, it would no doubt wind up cold when I wanted it (I have a Sunbeam electric blanket like that--very irritating).Now I admit that my knowledge base of electric kettle operation is very limited--old corded models, the Krups, and this one. So for all I know, most or all modern kettles are this smart. But if not, then I suspect the rest could learn a thing or two from this one.A couple of operational notes:I'm descaling it at least once a week. Did not descale the Krups that often--but it was white, so the scale was harder to see. I don't think there can be anything special about this unit that makes it develop more scale. In any case, descaling is easy: pour in an inch or so of white vinegar, boil it, and then leave it for 10-15 minutes. Rinse several times, until you can't smell vinegar any more.A nit: if you take the kettle off the base while in keep-warm mode, you can't turn it back off without putting the kettle back on first (or unplugging it briefly). Not a big deal but surprised me when I was filling the kettle to the brim, rinsing it after descaling and realizing that since I was about to go to bed, I didn't need to leave it on. I pressed the buttons several times and nothing happened, finally figured out that it was missing the kettle itself.A long review, but hopefully one of some use to another prospective buyer! ### ⭐⭐ 2.0 out of 5 stars So sad.... *by S***Y on Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019* I bought this in January of 2018 and used it a couple times a month in the fall and winter. Yesterday I filled it halfway and in a short time it was violently boiling over and running off of my counter top. I unplugged the unit and pulled the pot off the base. I am not sure how or why this happened but it could have been very dangerous if a child or animal was near. I loved this kettle but it is now non functional.
