The fabric is not soft - it is stiff and pretty much stays that way, and is kind of like sateen (for those old enough to remember that fabric). But I really like the feel and sound of it. Down comforters keep you warm - even in summer - just right by sort of tenting you inside a small body-conforming tentlike layer of air - with your dog, if like me you have a doxie - not by contacting your skin.
