How will the plastic insert hold up to the organic materials? I empty it regularly. Does it absorb odors or discolor?** A: I've had my EcoCrock since May 2013. The insert and exterior still look like new. I detect no odor or discoloration. We put a folded paper towel on the bottom of the insert to make sure all the contents come out easily. Very happy with this so far. **Q: How often on average do the charcoal filters need to be changed?** A: we purchased this in August of 2020. I place half a paper towel in the bottom when empty and I've never changed or bought new filters. I rinse the filter off if it has any mildew on it and hang it to dry from a magnetic clip on my fridge, have never had maggots, and have had it filled to the brim with compostable stuff. The charcoal will sprinkle out of the filter when you rinse it, but that's not a big deal. We have compost picked up once a week from a Nashville company so we deposit our great little bin into a bigger bin we keep near our kitchen trash can. That gets stinky so we've got a system down for expediency with opening that baby up. This is a great container. Attractive, easy to use and clean if you use it regularly like we do. **Q: We lost the green thing that holds the filter in place. Where can we get a replacement from please?** A: You can call the company - an actual (nice) human answers the phone! - and they'll send you a replacement. I've had this product for years and that piece went missing or broke years ago and I use it without it. Sometimes it's annoying because the filter slips out, but you can lodge the filter into place and most of the time it stays put. **Q: Can you rinse the charcoal liner** A: We do, and it still seems to work just fine. It doesn's hold a ton of material but also doesn't take up a huge amount of space which is good. And these are not really made for big hunks of food anyway, just scraps so that's fine with me. It has a little inner leafy green pail with handle in case you want to bring the whole thing out to the bin with you instead of just the bag of stuff. This also keeps the inside clean. When you put a bag in you can fold it over the edge of the inner pail so that when the lid is on the bag is not visible. The little sprout handle works great for one handed opening and has a charcoal filter in the lid. Have never noticed an odor so far. The quality is great. The body is really thick heavy ceramic, which I love. I think the thickness causes it to be at lower than room temp, which probably helps with smells too. It is somewhat vase shaped and oval so that it has a wider face, or turned a little, a thinner face for choice with counter storage space. Perfect smooth, shiny, clean looking white, with an easily cleanable surface like a dinner plate. And it's cute, but not too cutesy.
