A good solution for long term backp.
I wanted a solution for long term off-site backup. This was a great price per TB solution. I put all my long term personal data(pictures, software, code development files, personal data, etc.) on this unit and gave to my son in law to store to protect this from a disaster at my house, be it fire, tornado, or whatever. I have roughly 40 years of data I wanted to retain. On-line services work for my day to day data of about .5 TB, but my data needs were just too large for this approach. I didn't worry too much about this being refurbished, as I have a local copy of the data also. The chances of losing data are very low.

Great for the price
Bought to back my extensive music collection. Used with a 3.0 USB adapter in Windows 10. No problems after doing the typical disk admin.

I was leery about buying a refurbished hard drive, but I'm glad I did
About a year ago I had an external USB hard drive fail. This isn't the first time this has happened to me, but with past drives it's usually the circuit board that connects the drive to teh USB interface that tends to fail, not the drive itself, so the first thing I did was crack open the case to get the drive out for testing. This time, it turned out, that it really was the drive that was bad. Since the case and controller card were still good, I decided to save some money by buying an internal hard drive instead of a new external once and installing it in the old case. I decided on this particular drive because it was a heavier duty model, that I figured would be of a higher quality than the drives in most external assemblies.I was leery about ordering a refurbished hard drive, but I did it to save soem cash. When it arrived, I ran a bunch of tests on it and all of them passed with flying colors, so I decided it was safe to put into service. It's been running for about a year now, receiving near-constant backups from several different computers, and it hasn't missed a beat. I'm now getting to the point where I'm going to need even more storage, and I may well be ordering some more of these.

Runs hot and power hungry but surprisingly durable
I use these in a TrueNAS RAIDZ2 array and I've had two out of 10 purchased fail in four years. That's as good or better than any new drives I've ever purchased. They run hot. You can and should cool them but even so mine have lasted me years running in a less than hospitable environment. Think 90F ambient temps or more. The drives don't seem to care if it burns when you touch them. I've since moved on to larger capacities in newer pools but I still run six of these with a hot spare in a pool that sees about as much i/o as it possibly can and these just chug along.Oh, also they're loud.My guess is that these come out of AWS datacenters as storage is upgraded to solid state and / or larger capacities. They've already seen thousands of hours but are ready for more work. Trust any one of them with important data? Nah. With dual parity and a hot spare? Absolutely.

Outstanding Hard Drive!
Are you looking for a reliable hard drive at a decent price? If so, you can stop searching. You've found your drive. The Deskstar/Ultrastar line are a series of well-regarded hard drives that were first released by IBM many, many years ago. These drives were super reliable back in the day and they still are today. The technology behind these drives was revolutionary 20+ years ago and very little has needed to be changed in all that time. IBM might not be making these legendary drives any longer, but Hitachi/HGST still are and they're using the same tech that IBM did. Yes, they're that good. I personally have six of these running in my QNAP NAS and a smaller 2TB Ultrastar running in my PS4. I'm extremely happy with the price/performance of these and happily recommend them to anyone looking for the best drive their money can buy.
