He wanted to make a ready-to-drink bottled tea that tasted as good as the homemade iced tea that his grandmother β€œMimi” used to make. Granny’s recipe called for premium tea leaves and pure cane sugar. Following her instructions, the first big batches of Sweet Leaf Tea were brewed in Beaumont, Texas using pillowcases as tea bags and crawfish pots for brew tanks. A year after Clayton officially started Sweet Leaf Tea; he was joined by his best friend since childhood, David. They used garden hoses to fill the bottles, a handheld drill to put on caps, and applied the labels by hand. Our first ACL was a huge success in 2002. We sold nearly 10,000 bottles of tea and had blisters on our hands by the end of the 3 day festival. Sweet Leaf Tea moved headquarters to Austin, TX where Clayton and David went to college. You can find the single serving cans at grocery stores if you would like to try it before purchasing 8 64-ounce bottles. We tried several different varieties of this brand but I think the mint is by far the best. Don't get caught up in the organic, health nut hype with this stuff, though. The sweetener is organic cane syrup and organic honey instead of corn syrup, but there are 15 grams per 8 ounce serving. If you're like me, your glasses hold more than 8 ounces and that sugar adds up. Freshly brewed green tea has a lot of components that may be very beneficial to your health but, unfortunately, a lot of these degrade when green tea is commercially prepared and bottled. You will not get the same benefit from this stuff as you will in an equal serving of freshly brewed tea made with minimally processed green tea leaves. The bottles are PET plastic and that has been shown to leach endocrine disrupting substances. If you're looking at this tea as a good-tasting treat that is better for you than sodas, gatorade, or other corn syrup sweetened beverages, you'll be happy with the purchase because it really is delicious. If you're buying it because the words organic, honey, or green tea make you think it will improve your long term health, you'll be disappointed.
