I think they can be used without each other. **Q: Is there a power button? I plugged power into a working outlet, but the power did not turn on. Thinking if there is an alien/off button?** A: Don’t remember there is a button, just works. Water in? **Q: Can this be used for Carbonated water?** A: Where would the source of the carbonated water be? It would have to be from a pressurized Tap. This unit is VERY loud when cooling. I would think twice a lot it if you plan on putting it in a family area, kitchen etc **Q: Does it work on its side not standing up?** A: I would not suggest that you place this unit on its side. There are fan openings on the side that ventilate the unit for the cooling to work. Expand the photo of the unit and you should be able to see this aspect. The filtered water goes through the chiller and out the countertop dispenser. The flood monitor detects any leaks and controls the water shut-off valve just in case the RO unit, plumbing, or chiller failed. I use the cold water for drinking and also fill my countertop ice maker for crystal clear ice. I do wish it chilled the water even colder, but it's definitely refreshing on a warm summer day right out of the tap.
