He has done quite a few wonderful, imaginative, colorful Eastern European sagas, and he has done a marvelous translation into English -- with a unique story, great characters, writing, and casting. One of Johnny Depp's early roles, and just as quirky as anything he has ever done. He plays an independent young man working as a New York City fish inspector, when he is visited by his cousin, wonderfully played by Vincent Gallo, who matches him quirk for quirk. Their banter is pure delight and it sounds like Mr. Kusturica had the wisdom to let them just go for it, after he had shown his genius in casting them. Enter Jerry Lewis who runs Arizona's biggest Cadillac dealership, and wants the boys to go into the business with him. Now enter the fabulous Faye Dunaway, stepmother to Lili Taylor who is suicidal and cynical. The four are remarkable and entertaining. Jerry Lewis is touching and funny.I won't even go into the story as it is too crazy to summarize. Just sit back and enjoy the ride: the humor, the costumes, the performances, the wit, the tears -- and the gorgeous Cadlllacs. It is worth the price of admission just to see these vintage classics.The picture is spectacular in this early HD release. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Looking for Inspiration in the Desert *by S***Y on Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2013* Back when Johnny Depp movies were birthed from ideas and not amusement park rides, this curiousity was unleashed upon an unsuspecting (and largely absent) audience. Having seen both the truncated U.S. version and the longer, European cut, I would recommend seeing the full version, though it adds little in substance. Arizona Dream is a ponderous, dreamy project adorned with surrealistic touches and abstract scenes of behavior with no real purpose. The journey is the thing. And, truth be told, it can be a tedious and repetitive one. But it also feels alive in creative spirit and taps into that zeitgeist when films were trying to be more than enterprises. Not a complete success, but you have a writer, director and cast playing jazz in trying to figure things out. They caught the halibut, but it got away from them as well. It's a strange movie... the characters are very odd... but it's great fun to watch. Jerry Lewis was hilarious, Faye Dunaway was amazing... and oh yeah, Johnny Depp was great, as usual. The story hangs together well, in spite of the "Wonderland"-esque happenings.
