The silver side of the blanket helps to reuse body heat. The gold side actually deflects heat, and can help to prevent overheating or provide shade. The other colors such as army green, can be used provide coverage or shelter, without being super reflective and looking like a signal shelter. Other colors like red, pink and orange all have reflective attributes that can be used to make emergency signals and stand out, but also use the silver side to hold in heat. I purchased these to keep in our church's disaster preparedness stock. We get hot summers with wildfires, and wet winters with frost and heavy snow.
