I also want to share a little tip that I find works nicely for me. I take tracing paper and place it on top of each step and color with my pencils. I get a good feel for the process. I keep learning and improving my coloring skills. I am very thankful for this book and am definitely looking forward to the next edition. You will need to know how to use the techniques from this edition in order to be able to complete some of the techniques in the next edition. Not sure how many that will entail. It is well worth learning now as you can see sneak peeks of the upcoming additions on Ms. Elliston's social media page. Now for my original review. I don't know where to begin. This Guide is fantastic. I am new to Adult Coloring and am so grateful that Helen developed this easy step by step guide to really make a difference in your pictures. I still have a lot to learn but have already seen a difference in how my images are turning out. I love that Helen is very active on Social Media and has asked for input on her 2nd Edition. I am definitely looking forward to that Guide as well. Colorist's Special Effects is well done. You have easy to understand photos along with instructions to get many desired effects. From Chrome, Hair, Skin, Lips, Eye Glasses and more, there is something new to learn at every turn. There are a lot of tricks for backgrounds as well as everyday items that add to your colored pieces. Glitter nail polish has become one of my favorite items to make certain images pop. If you want to take your Coloring to a Higher Level, I highly recommend this book. Learn to do jewels, bugs, tear drops, water drops, paint drops and more. I could go on and on, but if you purchase the book you will see what I am talking about. I am enclosing just a small sampling of what I have done. My clouds had an oopsy. They turned out beautifully, but then my Dog decided she wanted my attention right then. I recovered the best I could. Lesson learned, play with Dog before Coloring. Thank you, Ms. Elliston, for such a lovely Book. This book makes great gifts for friends that are Coloring as well. Have gifted to some special people. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT for people of intermediate skill looking to bring more depth into their work *by J***H on Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017* This book is great for people of intermediate skill (i.e., those who already have experience coloring and are looking to improve their skills).There is a relatively short primer in the beginning of the book about shading and blending before getting into coloring specific effects, so if you haven't decided things like choice of medium (colored pencils, markers, gel pens, etc.), or if you aren't familiar with basic color theory (the color wheel, complementary colors, etc.), then you might be better off starting with something like New Guide to Coloring for Crafts, Adult Coloring Books, and Other Coloristas!: Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for All Skill Levels! (Design Originals), first.This book gives a lot of good advice on some intermediate shading and coloring techniques for a wide range of different objects and landscapes, such as people (eyes, lips, skin tone, and hair), nature (water drops, flowers, clouds, mushrooms, animal fur), 3D objects (balloons, glowing candles/lanterns), an assortment of gems, and backgrounds (snow, stained glass, sunset over water, ocean/water,, shadows, etc.), which should give any burgeoning young colorist a vast set of tools that should cover pretty much anything they will come across.Now, the book's techniques, themselves, may be a bit on the simplistic side, but I think it really best serves as giving you a starting point on how to approach coloring different things. As your familiarity and techniques improve, I expect you will want to build upon the steps listed in the book by incorporating additional shades and tones or adding additional fine detail.So would I recommend this? If you are in the right skill/experience zone that this book is geared towards: Absolutely!All in all, I would put the ideal skill level of somebody buying this book somewhere in between New Guide to Coloring for Crafts, Adult Coloring Books, and Other Coloristas!: Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for All Skill Levels! (Design Originals) and Colored Pencil Painting Bible: Techniques for Achieving Luminous Color and Ultrarealistic Effects. It doesn't go into advanced technique and concepts like the Colored Pencil Painting Bible does, but it doesn't assume you know basically nothing about color and coloring, like the New Guide to Coloring does. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Best book out there! *by L***T on Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2018* I love this book. I really wasn’t holding my breath that it would be what I needed since I’ve never had any luck with any drawing or coloring how-to book before. Last year I bought a copy of “Drawing for Dummies” and found it too hard to understand! I’m kind of embarrassed now but the biggest draw, no pun intended, to this book was its bright and beautiful cover. But the minute I opened it I knew it would be exactly what I needed. I like that there’s no lengthy introduction page of what’s in the book and what it’ll help you accomplish; it just did it. Right away you’re given big bright illustrations of everything you’ll be able to do with patience (with yourself) along with a “just right” sized worded explanation and then a pictorial how-to. That’s followed by practice. My favorite part is that you practice IN the book. You don’t have to get your own paper. The very first lesson of course Is about shade. I love that they don’t over-explain anything. Then your lesson is to color shade gradation in red. That’s great. Then they have you do it in purple, and then in blue and the last time in green. That’s the best way to learn - practice, practice, practice. This is followed by how-to tutorials on clouds, jewels, faces, lips, mushrooms, hair and eyes, plus MUCH more. The whole book is like this. By reading a short how-to followed by a great visual tutorial and then finished by lots of practice you give yourself the greatest chance of becoming the artist you want to be. The author is to be highly commended for putting it all together and getting it perfect. I’m so glad I gave it another shot and bought this gem of a book. I’ll be keeping it right next to me whenever I color or draw until I feel I no longer need it, and I know I’ll get there. Thank you again for a wonderful book.
