Just a centimeter or two down the tip is plenty hot enough.** A: It sounds to me you are not using the right tip or solder wires. Fine tip for SMD and big tip for THT. The needle tip is only for tiny pads and should be used with thin solder wires like .5mm and .3mm. **Q: Does this come with the metal tip cleaner pictured? It works well. I like the way the LED blinks when it's heating up and solid when it reached the set temperature, you quickly know when it's ready. The only drawback is you can't store the bits in the holes provided in the iron stand. They'll fall off.
