## Overview

The Staub 5-qt Tall Cocotte is a French-made enameled cast iron Dutch oven designed for professional-quality slow cooking, braising, and baking. Its tall, slim profile accommodates larger cuts and layered dishes while saving stovetop space. Featuring a durable matte black enamel interior that requires no seasoning, a self-basting lid with moisture-retaining spikes, and compatibility with all stovetops including induction, this cocotte delivers exceptional heat retention and even cooking. Built to last and designed to impress, it’s a versatile kitchen heirloom favored by chefs and home cooks alike.

## Description

The 5-quart Tall Cocotte is a taller version of the classic 4-quart cocotte, making it the ideal tool for cooking larger quantities, without taking up valuable stovetop space. The additional height is especially useful in cooking bone-in meat cuts like crown roasts as well as layered dishes like tians, or dishes that rise, such as soufflés. Plus, the added height reduces the risk of liquids boiling over and reduces splatter when deep-frying or searing.Like all STAUB cocottes, the Tall Cocotte is unsurpassed for slow-cooking meats and vegetables to tender perfection, and for simmering hearty stews and soups. Cast iron possesses exceptional heat-retaining qualities, so the pot heats evenly throughout. With a heavy weight, tight-fitting lid that retains moisture and tiny spikes on the lid interior that create a rain-forest effect evenly returning juices back onto food, you can expect moist, perfectly cooked food every time you use this pan.Rooted in French culinary heritage, STAUB cookware is beloved by professional and home chefs for its exquisite craftsmanship, exceptional performance, and timeless beauty. Each STAUB cocotte effortlessly and elegantly transitions from the oven to the table - you can cook and serve in the same dish. These heirloom pieces can be lovingly passed from generation to generation.

Review: Gorgeous, high-quality enameled cast iron Dutch oven, durable + great size & shape... - Staub is one of my favorite cookware brands. I like cast iron and have a lot of it including two enameled cast iron Dutch ovens from well known brands (but they were actually made in China). I inherited one of them from my Dad and purchased the other before I knew about French enameled cast iron cookware in general and Staub in particular. My Dad and I had the idea to compare the two brands and both seemed to be of good quality and they lasted for years, but they were far from perfect -- the enamel on one of them was easily chipped and the interior of the other one developed cracking and the surface started to flake off. In the intervening years, I discovered Staub and started building up a collection; the quality of the materials and workmanship is amazing. They are beautifully finished with several layers of gorgeous enamel (that resists chipping) and they are very heavy with a durable matte black interior. The lids are self-basting. They are pricey so I would usually purchase a different piece for the holidays each year. Sort of a gift to myself. I have two of the figural pieces (the tomato and the pumpkin -- so charming! but useful, too) the medium-sized coq-au-vin, a 3.75 quart French oven and three of the Dutch ovens (4 quart, 5.5 quart and 7 quart). I thought my collection was complete, although I wouldn't have minded if someone gifted me the cute artichoke figural piece). Anyway, I had been using my Dad's Dutch oven as a designated pot for making yogurt, cream of wheat and oatmeal when I noticed the flaking. I liked using it for this purpose because it was taller than my Staub Dutch ovens. I was so happy to see that Staub had introduced a tall version of the 5-quart Dutch oven, and I ordered it in the matte black. It looks great and It is perfect for so many things -- yogurt, of course but also soups and stews or baking bread. The size is versatile and it is just right for smaller families. The price was $199.99 when I purchased mine, and I thought that was a good deal. I have been looking for a Christmas gift for my SIL (a great cook) and I see they are now only $149.99! I also see there are great new colors available, too! This Dutch oven is definitely worth the price as Staub enameled cast iron is gorgeously finished, well-made, robust and durable + everything I make in these pots come out flavorful and delicious. It is 10 times better than the less expensive enameled cast iron I previously used. My older ones still look brand new. I know I will be passing all of my beautiful Staub pieces down to my children and grandchildren someday and I'm sure they will enjoy them using them for years, too.
Review: for Cookers, here is COCOTTE - STAUB. Not much more to be said. If you cook at home this is something worth owning a few of. There are many cast iron pots on the market these days at much lower prices, but I really like Staub’s coating, performance, and overall build quality. When there is a good deal, I always choose this over cheaper options. I would suggest adding it to your wishlist and picking one up when a good deal comes along. The 4qt size is just right for light meals for 3-4 people. The thick Cocotte body and the spikes on the inside of the lid hold heat and moisture well, which helps the food complete better. I especially recommend it for meat cooking. After use, I rinse out the inside with hot water then clean it with baking soda and a plastic brush to keep the coating in good condition. As long as you don’t overheat it on the stove (like using high heat for all time) or no oil for grilling, food does not usually burn or stick badly. It is worth trying if you enjoy cooking.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: forwondering for the dimensions given would the 11.89 inch be the length across the handles, and the actual pot 9.45 inch opening diameter?**
A: Outside of handles 11.89”
Actual pot outside diameter 9.45”
Actual pot inside diameter 9”
Actual pot inside height 5”
Pot including lid handle height about 7.5”
I hope this helps.
Great pot!

**Q: Is the bottom of the black covered in blue enamel like it appears in the photo?**
A: It is a dark blue-green. Very nice.
Very useful pot.

**Q: Why is there no enamel coating on the inside of the handles? It appears that they were missed in production.**
A: While the 5-qt. tall cocotte's handle insides *do* lack the enamel glaze of the cocotte’s outside or the thick ceramic lining of its inside, they *have* been coated with a thin layer of matte sealant that has repelled rust and moisture for the year+ that I've owned the cocotte. || Not gonna lie: As the owner of 3 other Staub enameled cast iron products whose handle insides are all perfectly smooth (i.e. the 12” grill, 3.5-qt. braiser, and 9-qt. cocotte), I actually returned the Staub 5-qt tall cocotte to Amazon after an initial purchase, citing the rough handle insides. || However, since I still needed this 5-qt. tall cocotte’s volume and slim profile for smaller cooking jobs for which my gigantic 9-qt. cocotte is overkill -- and since further online research reassured me that the 5-qt. tall's inner handles are rust-proof despite their rough hand-feel -- I eventually backtracked and ordered the 5-qt. tall cocotte again, directly from Staub's U.S. distributor, Zwilling J.A. Henckels, during a sale. || In the year+ since my purchase, I've gotten used to the 5-qt. tall cocotte’s rough inner handles; found that their rust-proofing is indeed legit; relied upon the cocotte for smaller batches of soups, stews, leafy veggies (kale, collards, ‘kilt lettuce’, etc.), and the occasional deep-fry (falafel, etc.); and have fielded many compliments from visitors and houseguests who, like me, find the 5-qt. tall cocotte gorgeous to look at (mine’s Matte Black) and pleasant to use. || YMMV, but I don’t regret repurchasing the 5-qt. tall cocotte after my initial aversion to its unfinished-feeling handle insides. Cheers. || [Your question isn’t recent; I answer it now (11.20.22) for the benefit of those who might be shopping Amazon’s annual Thanksgiving Week Staub sales -- including you if you’re still considering the 5-qt. tall! Be well.]

**Q: What is the height of this pot?**
A: Approximate height is 7 1/2 inches (18.5 cm).

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worth every penny.

Exceptionally pleased. I held off buying this, because of the price and my uncertainty regarding the actual utility of this dutch oven, compared to a cast iron one I own. Saw a good price and bought it. And? And I am so sorry I didn't buy this long ago. And, yes, Staub in particular. Several reviewers suggested this brand over *cough*. (You know). And I agree from what I have experienced. From sourdough loaves to stews and roasts to chickens and cornish game hens, this thing is a joy and produces wonderful meals... much better than standard simple cast dutch ovens. I am now planning, after saving a bit, to buy a bigger sister for larger meals, needs, wants. Oh, and it is gorgeous. So wonderful when something is very functional and pretty too.
