The PU makes it quite firm, so a larger pen like many of my more middle-sized fountain pens don't fit all that well, and thinner pens like ballpoints just seem kind of comically small, though as long as they have a clip, they'll stay put just fine. Closure is a simple strap through a loop - plenty secure, but there's no latch. Shouldn't be a problem for anyone.
