## Description

A capacitor is an electric component that temporarily stores an electrical charge. A "run capacitor" supports electric motors, such as in air conditioner or heat pump units, a fan motor and a compressor motor. The capacitor has two terminals. Capacitors come in a variety of sizes, depending on the capacitance (µF or MFD), such as 40 plus 5 µF, and also the voltage. A 440 volt capacitor can be used in place of a 370 volt, as it is build better, but the 370 can’t be used in place of a 440 volt. It will work for a while and will fail prematurely, as exceeding the capacitor's rated voltage will cause the dielectric to break down and the capacitor to short out. Same as an electric wire- 600V rated wire is better than 300V one .The capacitance(µF or MFD) must be the same or stay within 10%+ or 5%- of its original value . Example: 50 µF cap can be substituted by 47.5 to 55 µF with the same or better voltage ratings capacitor . Round oval-shaped run capacitors are commonly used for air conditioning, to help in the starting of the compressor and the condenser fan motor.

Review: 440 works great as 370 replacement - The fan on my A/C condenser simply stopped but the condenser coil was humming. My A/C guy said it sounded like a capacitor issue, so I opened the unit’s panel and saw one of two capacitors were slightly bubbled out on top. It was a 370 V, but reading showed me 440 V is a better and fully compatible option, as long as I kept the microfarads the exact same (higher voltage capacitors can handle more motor feedback and appear to be better for whatever else is fed to it). I ordered it and it came in the next day. I put on waterproof rubber gloves and did the safe things to short the connector, all after flipping off the circuit breaker. Then replaced the leads and put electrical tape back around the connections, then put the panels back in place and turned on the breaker, and it worked as soon as I turned on the A/C inside the house, again. For $10, it was a great learning experience, and we were only without the A/C about a day and a half. This capacitor even kept the same +/- 5% tolerance our prior one did. I would definitely get this again.

**Q: Original had 3 wires coming from the capac instead of three labeled spade connectors. two red, one brown. brown to b, 1 red to c. any wiring help?**
A: What I did was had label facing me. And I removed one wire at a time matching each move

A: Only if it has a weak one. These are normally found at A/C compressors.

The fan on my A/C condenser simply stopped but the condenser coil was humming. My A/C guy said it sounded like a capacitor issue, so I opened the unit’s panel and saw one of two capacitors were slightly bubbled out on top. It was a 370 V, but reading showed me 440 V is a better and fully compatible option, as long as I kept the microfarads the exact same (higher voltage capacitors can handle more motor feedback and appear to be better for whatever else is fed to it). I ordered it and it came in the next day. I put on waterproof rubber gloves and did the safe things to short the connector, all after flipping off the circuit breaker. Then replaced the leads and put electrical tape back around the connections, then put the panels back in place and turned on the breaker, and it worked as soon as I turned on the A/C inside the house, again. For $10, it was a great learning experience, and we were only without the A/C about a day and a half. This capacitor even kept the same +/- 5% tolerance our prior one did. I would definitely get this again.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It was an easy fix.

The blower motor in my HVAC system would not start, it would just hum until you manually turned the squirrel cage to gt it started. I really know nothing about how an HVAC system operates but do know that electric motors will not spin if the require a capacitor to start and the capacitor is bad so instead of paying someone for the repair I did it myself and saved a few hundred bucks. It was worth the price.
