I don't know what the strip is made of, but it is kind of rubbery. The controls are located at the end of the strip and there are more colors than I thought there were. You can leave it on one single color or cycle through all of them. There is a button to control the speed of the flashing as well. According to the instructions, there are 19 different modes of flashing patterns and 8 levels of speed and brightness. These lights can be run with 3 aa batteries or you can use the USB attachment to plug them in, which I plan on doing. If you think the strip is too long, you can cut it in half and insert one of the included connector pieces into the end later so you can put it back together again if you want too.
