If the barcode is on a faded surface or behind something shiny like tape, it can have some difficulty reading the code. But with some but if your try different angles it will read it. And it can be useful to see what a QR code says. (which helped me get on the WiFi at a few places.) And i can use it to quickly look up or find a book i would like to read as well. Overall i like to keep this is my pocket more than i admit.
