Would recommend not going much wider. **Q: how wide of a beam flange can this handle? I need one to fit 8-1/4”, hard to find!** A: I had the same question when I was shopping for a trolley. I have a 6.5" flange and it works great. As you know, you turn the center ring and the trolley wheels spread/come together. The threaded supports are each one inch thick with internal threads and the center ring is 8.25" long. On the 6 1/2" beam there is 1/4" of internal thread showing. That said I would be comfortable with a total of 1" internal thread showing, or 1/2" on both sides. Doing the math: 1" - 1/4" = 3/4"; 6 1/2 + 3/4 = 7 1/4" beam would be the maximum I'd be comfortable with. Worked great lifting a 800 lb planer from the shipping pallet. If your looking for a whinch too pay attention the the length a chain. My beam is 9' from the floor and I mistakenly purchased one for a height of 15' .... whole lot of extra chain! The only thing I wish it had was a nut on each end to help hold it together. I don't believe it will unscrew, but I would feel a little better with some extra security.
