You'll have to pour some water in a small port until is starts moving the water you are trying to pump, then screw the plug in quickly. Trying to run it without priming will result in damage, and I kinda doubt you'll get much in the way of service from the manufacturer located in venezuela. Otherwise, it worked fine for the one small job I gave it. This is more of a "just in case" pump, and the price is suited for that. I have no idea about how well it will last on a long pumping job or other life expectancy.
