I sharpened an old Buck knife i found many years ago and couldn’t believe how fast it put a decent edge on that blade. The fire starting ferro rod works great. Once you scrape through the Black protective coating you will be able to generate nice hot embers that will have your fire started in no time. Took me 4 strikes to start a fire with some dry grass and wood shavings i made with my knife and a dry piece of pine. The whistle is VERY loud and very high pitched. sure to grab attention. I tryed the tapered sharpener on a couple old fish hooks. not perfect, but it does a decent job of putting a sharp point on a dulled or damaged hook. i tryed it on the serrated blade on a hunting knife and didn’t care for the way it performed. seems to be a little to aggressive in my opinion. I would say it’s fine in an emergency when perfect isn’t an option. For the price i can highly recommend this great little tool. I’d pay double and still be satisfied. The instructions ARE in the package, and describe how to make sparks. One needs to further understand how to make fire with sparks. Not difficult at all, but it does need to be understood. Look on YouTube for videos of making fire with a ferro rod. (Ferro is abbrveiation for ferrocerium.) Easy peasy. For the question. YOU DO NOT USE THE DIAMOND ROD. You DO use the CARBIDE to quickly scrape the rod for a shower of sparks. As another answer stated, normally one removes the black paint coating on the rod first and then use the back of a knife to make sparks. In this case, since the carbide is so sharp, you can just plain use the carbide to 'scrape the paint off.' as you make sparks for the first time. Also, reading between the lines: If the rod is protected from heavy oxidation with paint, it needs to be repainted for long-term storage. At the least put some fish oil from your frying pan on it to coat it and prevent oxidation. **Q: Where is this made?** A: USA **Q: Can it sharpen a big knife?** A: Yes from large to small I have had no problems... Works best if used regularly & not wait til it rounded edge dull... Just a few swipes every week or two will keep the blade sharp...
