I design and build custom acoustic guitars. I also repair acoustic and electric guitars and restore historical guitars. Yes, you can use a higher guitar string gauge, to a certain point. You don't want to use huge strings on a guitar not designed for huge strings. With respect to asking if you could use a .009 for E and .012 for B, it depends. An electric guitar uses smaller strings. So, yes to an electric, no for an acoustic. .009 and .012 are too light for acoustic high E and B. General rule of thumb is to use the strings in the capacity for which they've been designed. **Q: For an acoustic guitar, what size would be good for a high e string?** A: I am assuming that you are referring to a steel string acoustic. Even then it depends upon the sound you want and the action you prefer. For the average steel string acoustic with "light gage strings, I would most likely choose a string of .010 in. If that seems to heavy, or the action seems to heavy, you could use a string of .009 in., or if you want a heavier tone (and action) you could try a .011 in string. I know that this did not help you much, but I could suggest that you check the sizes of that high E string on the packages of several reputable string companies, and see what they use. You might get a better idea from that. Best wishes in your effort. **Q: I ordered 9, 10, and 11 gauge (electric). I received 9, 0, and 1 gauge. What do those numbers mean?** A: 9=.09 0=.10 1=.11 **Q: How do you what strings you need on a squier?** A: The same set of strings you use on any other electric guitar. You can use extra light, light, medium or the heavy set (1-6 strings) of strings depends on how hard you want to play. If you’re a beginner you may want to start on extra light (.009) high E set of strings. ## Frequently Bought Together - 20-Pack Economy Single Electric Guitar Strings Bulk .009 High E (Extra Light) 09 Gauge, Individual Packed - Ernie Ball Nickel Plain Single Guitar String .009 6-Pack - Ernie Ball, Super Slinky Electric Guitar Strings 9-42 (Pack of 3 Sets) (2223x3) --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/355040063-20-pack-economy-single-acoustic-guitar-strings-bulk-011-high](https://www.desertcart.com.ar/products/355040063-20-pack-economy-single-acoustic-guitar-strings-bulk-011-high) --- *Product available on Desertcart Argentina* *Store origin: AR* *Last updated: 2026-10-26*
