Excellent Music Player (but you need an additional Playlist Maker as noted in this Review)

*by P***M on Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2016*

I have used the iPod Touch and iPod Nano for several years, but was disappointed with them as music players. Of course, iTunes lets you organize your tunes well, but these players.... both of mine had engine-RPM-whine through the Aux cables, even though I installed chokes, when using them with my car stereo. My Samsung Galaxy S5 was pretty good, but I wanted better; I did some digging and found this Music Player reviewed online. I took a shot and ordered this model, and at the moment I couldn't be happier with the performance. To my ears, the player is much better than my iPod or Android phones, and the Aux cable in my SUV no longer plays engine-RPM-whine with music.Be advised, though, that creating Playlists on this device is excruciating if you depend on the native software. After some online searching, I found this site which explained making Playlists for the FiiO X1 with some no-charge downloadable software they recommended. The Playlist information is available, but Amazon won't let me put the website in this review. I followed the steps faithfully, and was soon creating multiple, long playlists for this player with ease. Now I REALLY like this product.I found this model very well made, perhaps even heavier than my Galaxy phone, but elegant and simple in functions. The case is metal, and appears to be very robust. Probably a downside in long-term use is needing to scroll through interminable lists of Albums or Artists, looking for a specific choice, with the central Wheel. I have more than 5,500 tunes on my player, and if I hadn't found the method for creating Playlists I show above, I would be frustrated with actual use of this product. I think the music reproduction is good enough to merit the 5-Star recommendation I've given.

    Great, but not perfect.

*by R***L on Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2016*

Let's just jump right in.Pros:- Looks really, really nice. It's also nice that the inputs/ports, and buttons are each consolidated to a single side of the device. The original X1 had a port, or a button, on every edge of the device. It was a bit awkward if you were holding it (especially if you were holding it at the gym, and you sweat a lot; I was always paranoid about water damage).- It's got everything the original X1 had going for it, for a damn good price. SD card lets you have a ton of music on one device. Audio quality is phenomenal (through the headphone/line jack). Allows for lossless file types. Relatively easy to use.But it's not all great:- Bluetooth is spotty. It DOES work, but not very well. I've tried my bluetooth headphones with 2 other devices, and the X1 II is the only device that sometimes drops signal even when the device is literally touching the headphones. It's not awful, but it's not great, either.- Bluetooth connection to your car does NOT stream ID3 tag info. Which is kind of a bummer. My phone can stream artist / album / song name, no problem, and it's 3 years old at this point.- It's SLOW. A lot slower than the original X1, so I don't really understand why, since I don't really see what has changed from the last version, aside from adding Bluetooth (it's slow even when Bluetooth isn't turned on). Sometimes changing to the next track takes a full 3 seconds before the input is recognized, and something happens. Browsing is a bit slow as well. (Yes, I'm using the latest firmware).- The touch wheel is not perfect. It's kind of frustrating to move just ONE space in any direction, it always seems to move two spaces instead. The physical click wheel worked better, but it definitely didn't look as nice.Oh, and a few tips:- Vehicle mode does NOT mean you can plug it in to your car's USB port and it will play through it. Read the manual; vehicle mode means plugging the device in will default it to "charge the battery" mode instead of "mount storage for file transfer" mode.- Let the X1 format your card for you.- Use MediaMonkey. Not only is it great for organizing your music collection, it'll make moving files over to the X1 easier.- You don't actually HAVE to update the media lib. You can "browse files" without updating the library, it just goes through the SD card folder by folder, and you can play music that way. Updating the media lib is only needed to grab/log ID3 tags, and use the category browser (to search by genre, etc).- Yes, updating the media lib takes a while. Just be patient, it only has to do it once every time you add music.- Leave bluetooth off until you need it. It'll start up faster. A LOT faster.I'm still giving this thing a 4 star review, and here's why:- Occasionally spotty bluetooth functionality isn't a dealbreaker for me. Sound quality is noticeably better when you go direct in (not the X1's fault, that's just how Bluetooth audio is), so I usually just use that.- Browsing / song skipping speed will likely be corrected in future firmware updates. FiiO is usually pretty good about that. If it isn't, it's really only a minor inconvenience, because....- Despite the minor complaints and not-so-perfect touch wheel, this is STILL a very solid and well-made, very attractive portable media player with EXCELLENT sound quality and massive storage space potential for a RIDICULOUSLY low price. What makes me really like FiiO is that they offer a competitive product at an extremely reasonable price. I've been looking for a high capacity, well-made music player for a long time, and for the longest time the only option was an iPod touch. And that's, what, $400 for 128 GB of space? Since they don't even sell old-school iPods anymore? I don't need a video player or portable gaming thingy, I already have a smart phone.Or, you could buy a FiiO X1 II and a 128GB SD card for $140.I'll go with FiiO every time.

Better than what I was using and sounds good to my untrained ears

*by M***M on Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2017*

As was mentioned in another review, the scroll wheel takes a bit to get familiar with, and it would be nice if there was a little more "tactile feedback" on the buttons such as a raised dot in the middle of the button in the center of the scroll wheel so you are sure you are pressing the center button and not the scroll wheel without having to actually look at the player, but other than that, it works very well.My primary purpose in purchasing a new MP3 player was that I wanted one with Bluetooth capabilities. This one fit the bill. The screen is big enough to display most of the information needed and to my untrained ears, the sound quality is pretty good. One complaint I read in other reviews is that the Bluetooth sometimes gets a little strange. I noticed a pattern and I agree it is a little odd. If it is already paired with something, and whatever it is paired with gets turned off, it seems to have problems re-establishing the Bluetooth connection. When this happens, I just turn the player off and back on and then it connects just fine. Another complaint about the Bluetooth is that it takes too long to pair up after it is turned on. Since this is the only Bluetooth device I use, I don't really have anything to compare to it, but it does seem to take longer than it should from the time I turn it on until I can hear the music. But, to be clear, I consider that to be a very minor issue. So, over all, I am satisfied with the player.
