In my experience, those tolerances are very generous. This will do the job at much lower temps, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't also work at a much higher temp. You simply don't want the teflon to melt. **Q: Would you use to repair a main valve?** A: Yes, I would use this packing material to repair the stem packing of a main cold or hot water valve in a home system. I plan to use this to repair two outdoor hose faucets and several indoor shut offs that have started leaking at the stem after many years. **Q: What size valves are these for? When do you use 5/32 instead? Which works better?** A: I am not a plumber by trade, so I don't know if I am giving the best advice. I am a Journeyman Electrician, a Certified Professional Locksmith, and a Certified Safe Technician by trade. I do my own copper sweat soldering, and other plumbing for years and some handyman work so I do have some experience in the trades. I use the packing string under the cap of most hose bibs and water valves. The larger ones I just wrap around a few more times. You would probably use the 5/32 in the larger valve caps and just do a few less wraps. I don't do enough for me to want to store multiple sizes so I just go with the 3/32 for everything. It has always worked for me. I don't do commercial plumbing, but I can see where if I did I would use the 5/32 on some of larger commercial valves. Can I assume that this will stand up #2 heating oil?** A: This stops minor leaks at the outer part of the stem so it can turn easily. Your value may need its washer replaced or the value replaced if the leak is large. Take the old stem nut off to see if the old packing can be replaced or you need the value replaced with all-brass ball value.
