We learned to use the plate as a template to mark the holes with a pencil, and then drill pilot holes for the screws. This made installation a lot easier. Another post mentioned the lack of screws, but the length of screw depends on what you're using it for. I used it as a reinforcing bracket for a 6" post brace of each leg of my pergola. I needed 4" screws for this project.
