Ideal for a wide range of acid-loving plants, it covers 2,500 to 5,000 square feet, making it a sustainable choice for eco-conscious gardeners. ## Description Cottonseed Meal comes from the remains of cotton seeds, de-hulled and crushed to remove the oil. It is a great slow release mildly acidic fertilizer for acid loving plants, and for alkaline soils. Planters Cotton Oil Mill doesn't list a NPK assay for their product as it is intended for livestock feed, but cottonseed meal usually has 5% to 7% Nitrogen, 1 to 2% Phosphate (Phosphoric acid in water), 1%- 2% K (Potassium or Potash) with numerous trace elements. It is a balanced, natural fertilizer by itself with an acid pH making it the basis of many organic fertilizers. Due to its slow nutrient release, bloodmeal can be added at a 20% ratio to supply faster releasing nitrogen for starting vegetables and fall flowers. Application rate: 10-20 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. Please note, this is an organic fertilizer based on natural products, but may not qualify under all of the certifying organic agencies due to perceived concerns of pesticide residues and GMO seeds. The great majority of commercially grown cotton is GMO, and sprayed with short duration pesticides and herbicides in warm regions. The seeds are protected from sprayed chemicals, but may contain small amounts. These chemicals should be broken down when the cottonseed meal decomposes in healthy soil. The seeds will have the GMO gene to make Bt toxins though. Cotton also contains a natural pesticide toxin, Gossypol, that must be removed from cottonseed oil before it can used for cooking. There will be some gossypol left in the seed meal also, unless you have the GMO seeds that only make harmless trace amounts of gossypol in the oil. (This GMO meal could be used in human grade foods for the protein). Few cotton crops are certified organic. For those that are not organic, many feel the cottonseed meal has more benefits than the problems they may possess. ## Features - 50 pound bag. The fruit gets huge and sweet. A cup or two for a 6" citrus tree sprinkled inside the drip line and watered in does wonders. We get orders now in the neighborhood for fruit and juice. Works on most any acid loving plant.
