For very dark writing, I prefer Neox lead but it can smudge/smear a little. My second favorite is Ain Stein lead, which almost never smudges and lasts a little longer (not quite as soft as Neox). **Q: How durable is this? I am a graduate student in EE and math and break so many of the best mechanical pencils from staples and other office stores.** A: I actually bought this mp to add to my mechanical pencil collection.
