Can be used over bare wood and oil-based and water-based stains" I have used it on latex painted wood surfaces and it's fine. And, because it is water-based, it doesn't get that yellow-ish look over time like the oil-based version. Hope that helps. **Q: I painted my table and want a clear protectant, so i can clean it from food spill and such. Will this work without messing up my paint job?** A: Be sure to to read the instructions and use a good brush. I use it on woodworking projects and sand with 220 grit, lightly between coats. In my opinion the more the merrier. It is white in the can but dries absolutely clear. The white helps seeing where you have applied the clear. **Q: Can you use it on a dining table or will glasses leave rings** A: I used this on a dining table, and glasses do not leave rings. It has held up very well across MOST of the table. It was also very easy to work with. However, I will mention that certain sections have basically "peeled/worn" away; now, this could very well be my fault (bad surface prep), OR the fault of the very deep-grained oak I was using, and I didn't use grain filler (water perhaps got into the "gaps" in the grain, sat there, and created a spot for even more water to seep underneath the finish.) I, personally, will probably use something oil-based next time I refinish my dining table, but I wouldn't hesitate to use this again for other future projects. **Q: Can you use this over Annie Sloan Chalk paint to protect?** A: You can, but if you want it to have that flat, milky finish Annie Sloan Chalk paint is known for, then you shouldn't. This finish will give it a shine, even though it's satin. The recommended finish for chalk paint is wax (which I believe Annie Sloan also makes, but I'm not 100%). However, it's rather expensive and needs to be reapplied once every 6 months or so for best results. If you don't want to use wax, I've been told that General Finishes QTHM High Performance Water Based Topcoat will keep it looking the way chalk paint should.(Note to others: chalk paint is not the same as chalk BOARD paint. Of all the timber treatment’s this is the most successful I have used. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great product for indoor projects *by D***N on 19 April 2026* Purchased for an indoor project as a means of reducing the odor associated with the oil based product. This was the first time I used the water based product. The photos illustrate the finished results on an kitchen island project. The wood pictured is cypress stained with Minwax oil based light pecan. The long horizontal boards (first photo) were pre-stained prior to installing to reduce indoor oil. The polycrylic was applied with a disposable natural fiber "chip" brush. A total of 3 coats was applied with light sanding with fine grit sand paper between the first and second coat. The end pieces (photo 2) were finished outside prior to install using the same process. Overall the product use easy to apply and went on bubble free. Overall appearance after final coat was very good despite using a "disposable" natural fiber brush. Clean up, very easy as the brush was easy to clean with just water. I was able to use the same "disposable brush" for the entire project, and the brush still is in good shape (see photo 3), with little to no residue present. Odor was minimal and did not persist for more than 1 to two days. This is a versatile product for indoor projects. Clean up is easy with just soap and water, much safer for indoor use due to less chemicals. I'm quite pleased with the results, and would expect a "furniture grade" finish if applied with a good quality brush or sprayed.
