When a small child we had a village bakery run by Danish people and everyone loved their pumpernickel .. how can you make smørrebrød without it? Since then I have found only light rye bread with lots of carmel coloring in it, and often a lot of cracked grain like you'd feed to the hens. Try stacking leftover frickadellar on this with either a little beet pickle or maybe whole berry cranberry sauce. In Denmark you'd have black current preserves but that's almost impossible to find here, cranberry gives it that same sparkle and is also good on roast beef, especially brisket, leftover chicken or roast pork. Also good is sliced summer sausage with a few slivers of red onion ... or blue cheese with a raw egg yolk in an onion ring. Anything tasty works .. just stack it on a single slice of pumpernickel, eat with knife and fork because otherwise everything will slide off and run down your arm. It really wants cold Carlsberg beer, but a good domestic will do, and then you will smile for the rest of the day. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The best bread ever *by B***A on Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2016* It took me about two weeks to receive this bread so I began to worry, since it was my first purchase of Amazon food products. Different thoughts came to my mind. Would this bread be moldy, would I get the bread past expiration date, even something like, Would it be safe for me to eat it? The bread arrived in well-packaged refrigerator bag. Inside the box with bread it was printed in big numbers the expiration date. So I received it on 10/07/16, and it said that it must be thawed before 04.28.17. I know I will finish 6 loafs before that. I thawed the first loaf last night. It is fresh and it is phenomenal. This is all I am going to say. Amazon – please continue to carry this bread, I will buy it for as long as you have it. ### ⭐⭐ Broken bread *by J***Y on Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2018* Have purchased this bread other places for years and this tastes the same. However, when the six loaves arrived in Nov.. I opened one package and I noticed that some slices were "broken" down the middle. I put the others in the freezer and when I opened some later on they were fine but two more loaves had problems. In the last one, just defrosted, not only were most of the slices cracked or broken in a few pieces but several just had holes in them. Never have bought this pumpernickel before that I had this problem, and I have bought it for years, directly from stores.. Maybe the post office threw a box of frozen bread around, though was fairly well packed, or the "making" of the bread has gone down hill?
