## Description

Product description PortaPow Triple USB Power Monitor with SmartCharge Clear Screen Shows voltage (V) current (A) and total current (mAh) on a large bright backlit screen which can be turned to face you regardless of how the USB socket you plug into is oriented. Three Output Choices Three output sockets: USB-A power+data, and data-blocking USB-A and USB-C sockets so you can charge safely from public USB sockets which may otherwise be infected with malware. Built in SmartCharge chip will optimise charging speed based on your device which can double charging speed in some cases. Twin Power The two data blocking sockets can be used at the same time, so if your USB socket has enough power you can charge two devices at the same time. Only 5V charging is suppoted from these sockets. The USB-A sync socket supports higher charging speeds such as Qualcomm Quick Charge. Memory Store Use the button to switch between 9 memory positions, storing the total current output in each.

Review: Very nice product! - Works great, bought it to test a power brick battery with two usb ports. One is 1.0 amps the other is 2.0 amps. You can do this type of test on any usb port. Simply plug this in to the port, then attach the device to this. Port A was 1.2, and port b was 2.1. It is also nice for protection. There are 2 usb ports on it. One is set up to charge a device only, and blocks anything from attempting to download or read anything stored on the device. The other allows charging and data reading, uploads, or downloads. The protected port is great, especially if you are using any usb port that is shared publicly. For charging your device.
Review: Easy to Use Portable Tester - Purchased the PortaPow Dual USB Power Monitor to test a portable solar panel and some cables that we recently purchased. The first picture shows how the unit was received in a plastic bag. Second picture shows the instruction sheet that is folded and enclosed in the bag. The unit was well packed in a padded shipping envelope and arrived in good shape. The unit worked great and made verifying the output of the 2 USB ports on the solar panel a snap. The third picture shows the device display that was taken indoors and it clearly shows the back lighting in operation. Had concerns about how the display would be in the bright sunshine. The display, even in bright sunshine, was easy to read. The last picture shows the display in bright sunshine. The protective plastic film is still on the display. The instructions tell you to remove it. I wanted to test the unit first so left the protective film on during these pictures. The display is crisp and clean once the film is removed. The unit displays basic voltage, current and a cumulative value that equates to mAh for evaluating battery pack charge capacity. That's all that was needed for the testing we did. The device specifications state there are nine memory positions to store the mAh readings. This could be useful for anyone who wants to track or compare differences between chargers and devices. The instruction sheet clearly states that the backlight will turn off automatically after 5 minutes to save power. This gives a more accurate mAh reading. Simply push the button on the device and the display will turn on again. Did not test the device readings against any laboratory test equipment to verify accuracy of the readings. Our main use is a quick test reading that does not require high accuracy. See no reason to doubt the accuracy claims from the manufacturer. It was very easy to determine the voltage drop of some new "heavy duty" USB cables. We simply swapped individual cables between a fixed charger, the PortaPow and a battery under charge and noted the readings. A very simple test, but we were pleasantly surprised to see how the larger AWG wire used for the USB power leads in the new cables really made if difference in the charging current. The PortaPow has two USB test ports;USB1 and USB2 USB1 -- is charge only and blocks all data transfer. This allows you to charge your device from any USB socket without risk of data hacking. The data blocking prevents downloading or reading anything stored on your device through the USB port. This is especially important when you are using any USB port that is shared publicly. USB2 -- passes both data and charge. The unit size was easy to hold when making cable changes during our tests and the light weight (.8 oz) makes it a very portable device. The cost was low enough that we have one in our home computer shop and carry another one for use in the RV when setting up our portable solar panel. This product was not provided as a sample for this review, so none of these comments are influenced in any way by the seller. UPDATE - added a couple of pictures to better show the size of the unit. Also added statement about backlight operation of the display.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Any way to tell the wattage like the older model?**
A: The new V3 model does not show wattage, but it can be calculated as volts x amps.

**Q: Can this device also calculate and display how much data is being transmitted?**
A: No. It monitors voltage and amps through it but not data.

**Q: Does the meter log current and voltage data?**
A: If by logging you mean send it to a file to keep a historic record, no. It just shows the current consumed voltage and current, as well as a total consumed current since it was last reset.

**Q: Will this keep a usb powerbank's outputs enabled? i'm powering a low-current, non-usb load, and my powerbank turns itself off...**
A: According to the product description, it has a parasitic drain of about 13mA to run its circuitry. That should be enough to keep some DC adapters awake. Not sure if the 13mA rating is with LED on or off, but when the LED auto-shuts off, you can shine a light into the LCD display and see that it's still working with no load. Long story short, I've noticed that my small smart DC adapters stay energized when the PortaPow is plugged in even with no load (including USB cables) but have to assume that threshold currents would vary depending on the powerbank.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice tool to have around if you've always wondered how much power your USB devices use
*by L***Y on March 6, 2017*

This is like a Kill-A-Watt for USB devices. I have the first generation of this, and this version addresses a few limitations of that. First, this is lighted. My first generation is not lighted, and that makes it harder to read. The backlight goes off after a while, but you can turn it back on by pressing the round button. There's also 2 USB A ports to plug your charging cable in. The lower one blocks data, and if you have one of those non-standard chargers that can output higher voltage / current, that's the one you want to use. I tested it with a Lenovo Yoga Book charger (looks like a USB charger, but can output up to 11V) and can see that it was being charged at 11V 1.5A. Finally, how do you test a USB charger that has a micro USB cable molded to it? No worries, just plug that charger into the micro USB port of the PortaPow and you're done. Is it essential for the average owner? No. Is it useful? Sometimes, especially if you're troubleshooting. Is it fun to see how much power USB devices are using? Absolutely!
