Once I did that a few times it straightened **Q: Is the weight in the rope or the handles?** A: I believe it's in the rope though the handles are solid. I love this rope and find it easier to use than an unweighted. It doesn't feel all that heavy but it performs better than a flimsy rope. **Q: Is there a way to shorten the rope?** A: Not made to be shortened but it is possible.
