A strong scrape causes sparks of burning magnesium. Directing the sparks onto some kindling (I like to use a boll of dryer lint and some shredded paper) starts the fire. This product has only a light coating of magnesium. I strapped it all off to get a fire going when I was testing it out. I would recommend it as an emergency fire starter only. I don't think even a well-practiced person could get more than 2-3 fires going with this striker. But the addition of the whistle and compass makes it a product worth having in an emergency kit. **Q: What is the rope for ?** A: I also want to know what the ropes are for.
