They are made of grasses and cardboard so they are biodegradable. My hamster tends to not soil them because her cage is the recommended minimum size of 850sq inches. So many hamster products are sized for dwarf hamsters, so I had no idea when I ordered these if they would work or not. My hamster is still fairly young, and on the smaller side, but she has no trouble with these, and I think a hamster a little bigger than her would also do fine. If your Syrian is on the larger side, these may not be the best option. It would be nice to have an extra large size option for the chonkers out there. As for quality, they're actually very thick and sturdy, and they fit together well.
