The back isn't a complete piece but the frame is more like a tightly wrapped 'C' and you slide the photo in the end tabs of the 'C'. I've used all 6 in the pack and haven't had to buy specific landscape or portrait as the photos hold tightly. They're very easy and there's no pieces to lose like a sliding back to a traditional photo. One thing I'd strongly advice- use 3M tape or some other removable tape vs what's on the back of the frame if you want to ever move or remove the photo.
