Rich in caffeine, mate is a healthy and natural drink, made from the dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis, a subtropical tree. It has the stimulating effect of coffee and the healthy qualities of tea: that’s why it is more frequently considered as an alternative to those 2 drinks! Griezmann, Messi, Obama, Pope François… famous people from all walks of life have fallen for this energising, detox drink. Although it can be made in the same way as tea, mate is traditionally drunk in a mate gourd with a filtering metal straw called a bombilla. What makes our yerba mate set unique Handcrafted Mate Gourd Each mate gourd, handcrafted in Portugal, reflects true artisanal expertise—far from mass-produced Chinese manufacturing. 330 ml ceramic gourd. Organic Mate Included Our mate is made exclusively from high-quality leaves, with no debris, stems, or branches. The result: a non-powdery mate, free from bitterness, with a subtle vegetal taste. 100% organic. Responsible & Socially Committed Packaging designed and made in France. Our yerba mate cup: a mix of modern shapes and traditional materials We chose clay, a micro-porous material which insulates better, and we also chose a narrow opening, which retains heat longer. The enamelling ensures that the gourd is sturdy and easy to care for : no need for time-consuming scraping out as with traditional gourds, which can go mouldy. Our gourd is easy to wash by hand or in the dishwasher. It is manufactured by a ceramic factory in Portugal : they are the experts in terms of ceramics know-how! Did you know? Prepare mate - the traditional way Fill at least 1/4 of the gourd with mate. Tilt the calabash so that the mate slides down one side. Moisten (cold or warm water) the leaves on the empty side. Place the bombilla on the empty side. Pour hot water (80°c max) on the empty side of the bombilla. Top up the water level during the day, without changing mate. ## Features - 🧉 YERBA MATE CUP SET - Yerba Mate Set consisting of a ceramic yerba mate gourd (330mL) with a unique design, handcrafted in Portugal, a stainless steel bombilla and an 80g bag of our organic yerba mate "Original", our best-seller. It is without bitterness, soft with a subtle vegetable taste which can think of green tea. **Q: Apparently the smoking process to create the yerba causes cancer. anyone know anymore about this concern?” edit | delete** A: I am a qualified Food Scientist and can share some facts regarding scientific studies for you to make an informed decision based on scientific data. The role of hot mate in increasing the risk of cancer of esophagus, larynx, and oral cavity seem to be supported by several epidemiological studies when drinking hot. The temperature could act by damaging the mucosa. However, there is no sound population study on mate consumption as a risk factor for cancer. More research needs to be done before a definitive statement can be made regarding cancer risk associated with any of the various forms of mate consumption. The only studies I have found that could relate to cancer association with mate consumption will indicate if drinking more than 1L of hot mate per day.
