They seem to have neodymium magnets, 12 in each round thing. They hold very good, and I suspect that reviewers who say they don't hold good are trying to use them on curved surfaces. They are designed for FLAT, or almost flat surfaces When you put them on a flat metal surface, you cannot pry them off by hand, except by twisting the L-bracket for leverage. Best deal too, considering how many magnets you get total.
