He's a concrete worker but in the off season he sells firewood. As a result he has used a lot of splitting mauls. So when he heard me turning into a Fiskars salesman hyping it up because I was proud of my confident decision to buy him one, he was concerned I had gotten brainwashed by some Fiskars ad. The look on his face when it arrived and he was about to swing it said he was ready to show me I had probably made a dumb decision because what would I know about what he needs for splitting wood. Swing after swing with this maul his face slowly changed. He never actually admitted to me that it is a good maul. I overheard him telling one of his firewood customers that it's the best maul he's ever split wood with. It's durability is amazing! It works so good that splitting wood became my new favorite cardio exercise. You want to strengthen your core? Swinging an 8lb Fiskars splitting maul at some dry seasoned oak not only burns the same calories as HIIT or Rucking (about 400 to 700 calories per hour) but watching the wood split is oddly satisfying and it's a good side hustle. **Q: Is this a good axe to fell medium to larger diameter trees?**
A: It is NOT an axe but a wood splitting maul( blockbuster in Aussie speech). To fell a tree you would be much better off with a chainsaw. A purpose built felling axe such as a Plumb, Kelly, Gilpin, Gransfors is the alternative but you would need to be very skilled and fit to use one No doubt Fiskars would manufacture good felling axes but the Iso Core is not suitable for felling.

**Q: How does it compare to the popular fiskar x27?**
A: It's a different altogether. I own both and the maul is a heavy beast! I like that that 8 lb maul's Iso Core handle absorbs vibration much better than the X27mif the wood you are trying to split is tough like twisted elm and you need repeated strikes. The X27 is a shorter and it is a much lighter axe(not a maul) to swing making it great for splitting straight grained wood. The 8 lb maul is great for splitting large rounds it is my favorite maul for heavy splitting.

**Q: 36 inches is very short, is it not?**
A: No.  Swinging a metal and fiberglass yard-stick is not as easy as you would think.

I really like this maul! I have it paired with the Fishers X25 axe and they are a perfect combo. This maul is the perfect weight. It is not so heavy you can't swing it over and over. You can really get a rhythm going on a stubborn log. But rarely does a log resist busting when using this. You can hear the satisfying sound change as the maul lands when the log is busted internally. It goes from a whacking to deeper thud and you know it has given in to the weight and sharpend steel of this maul. There is no vibration in the handle. No matter how long you use it, your hands do not hurt. The anti-vibration tech Fishers has really works. I can split for hours and it never hurts my hands. I have used it drive in a few wedges and it works like a champ. Whatever they use to make this from is amazing. I have not had to sharpen it yet. It is still just like it was brand new. It holds a very sharp edge and cuts through white oak, red oak and hickory like butter. If you have to split wood, this maul is the way to go. I can't wait to go cut some more just so I can use this again.
