Review: Excellent, with caveats - I've been living with this a few years now, and use it every day, on wood floors. It's excellent for removing most (dry, small) stuff from the floor. However, it's important to keep the cleaner in good condition for it to be useful, it's easy to kill its performance. Here's what I do, and it works well. 1. Only use it with the optional cyclonic attachment, and empty this very frequently. If you're watching and marvelling at the stuff rotating in the container, you're reducing the suction: you're losing energy in the airflow that could be used in lifting detritus, to move the stuff in the container around. 2. I use this with a 3Ah battery, and no less than two bars charged. This keeps the motor turning at top speed for better suction. 3. Buy a spare cloth filter. Fine dust which escapes the cyclone chokes the filter quickly and reduces suction. 4. When suction drops, stop hoovering to avoid choking the pipes. I have a spare clean filter and battery. Every time I swap the battery (about 50% discharged), I change the filter, check the pipes, and empty the cyclone container. If I don't do this, the hoover gets choked, the suction decreases, it heats choked more, and it just gets worse. It's excellent for day to day use - hair, rice crispies, coffee, crumbs etc. on a hardwood floor, if maintained as above. Absolutely hopeless on a deep pile tufted rug. I break out the monster corded Shark for that. I probably use it about ten times as often as the Shark. It's not designed to replace that, but as a 'little and often' vacuum, which it excels at. Plenty hard-wearing, and standing up well over a few years. Don't buy if you're trying to clean a building site, or expect it to replace a big corded hoover. Do buy if you want to clean up quickly after children and pets, and like the Makita advantage (quality tools, and at least as important, high quality and readily available batteries). Be realistic: it's running from an 18V battery and is not designed to be hoovering up plaster dust. At least, not for very long.
Review: Surprisingly good suction - I'm surprised how good suction it has. Most of the time I don't have to use the highest power mode. I've got two 5Ah batteries but I'm able to vacuum all house on one battery. Obviously I use cyclone attachment so the filter doesn't get clogged for significantly longer time. The time the dust gets to the filter is when I lift the vacuum up side down to suck some spider webs, or when I vacuum my car without cyclone. The only problem is that I sometimes need some flexibility and I would need elastic pipe.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How many batteries does it need**
A: I use 1 x 5ah battery that gives more than adequate long domestic use. If you have anything less than 4ah you would need X2.
I blow out the nylon filter regularly on an air line to maintain 100% pick up efficiency. I have not tried washing it which would probably do the same

**Q: does the vacuum come with a carpet nozzle as per the picture?**
A: Hi hello Good evening, in response to your question re the Makita DCL 281FZB Vacuum Cleaner ? Yes I can confirm that I am delighted with machine and it comes with a carpet head, extension tube and a fine end attachment that is all neatly packaged within a cardboard box with instructions. Good value for money. Take care, stay safe best wishes Tom

**Q: Can this unit be used with a hose attachment attached to a circular saw or sander? Is it practical to do so for small amounts of cutting or sanding?**
A: If you can adapt a hose from your workshop tool to fit over the 30 mm o/d pipe at the vac cleaner, you would have about 15min continious runing time and approx 1/2 pint dust volume

**Q: Is this much of an upgrade from the makita dcl180 version? thank you.**
A: Upgrade? Yes! But still falls short of what you would expect for the cost v performance. I purchased this for my Motorhome but has now been replaced by the household handheld Dyson.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Honest review by Makita fan (Pros ☑️ and cons✖️)
*by A***K on 1 January 2021*

Okay, honest disclosure first – I am a Makita fan. I love the ecosystem, and I have numerous tools with them 🧰. In all honesty - slight underwelmed (pros ☑️ And cons ✖️ Below) Pros: ☑️ Actually more compact than expected ☑️ Build quality seems open “ Makita“ Standard and very high, especially like the quality of the rubber on the handle grip. ☑️ Was really worried that the extension would cause me to Crouch. It doesn’t, it’s the perfect height! ☑️ When empty, suction power is significant. ☑️ When using on full power, I always got a decent 25 minutes of use on a five amp 18 V Makita battery, if not more. ☑️ Looks great! Cons ✖️Three words, loss of suction. This is by far the biggest letdown of this hoover, when hoovering dust or smaller particles dates around the linen filter and clog it. ✖️ The result of the above, cuts the suction in half mean you have to empty and dust off the filter really currently. ✖️ It’s messing to clear, and will typically require you to wash the linen filter after every use. ✖️ On some carpets when you pull the vacuum back, the front of the float or lift up pulling the suction away from the floor. This could’ve been solved with better quality wheels on the front. ✖️ The dust flap, is terrible. So this stops the hoovered debris going back down the vacuum shaft, however what happens is small particles collect at the base of the chamber set in some cases hindering or keeping the flat open so debris falls back down. 🔚 so in summary, If you are using this for workshop only use, then I suspect it would do fine. However whilst I was using it for both workshop and general housecleaning, the latter the Makita fails to measure up. The thing I’m most surprised here is Makita miss designing the filter mechanism, which is causing the loss of suction. I have a really old hoover brand handhold from five years ago, that has a cone shape filter with thicker material and this doesn’t lose suction even when the entire thing is full! If I could give this a 3.75, I would. However it’s not a 4 star product. Makita - try harder across your range please.
