You do need a wine stopper to keep the inert gas in and additional oxygen out. Doesn't appear to need to be a special stopper though. **Q: Is preservation performance affected if I lay the bottle on a rack after closing? I have a chiller which doesn't accommodate standing bottles.** A: No. It doesn't need a thick layer of gas to keep the wine protected as long as it stays still, but you might give it just a little more if it's on its side. **Q: Can someone tell me why simply pouring the wine into a smaller bottle, or half bottle, filling to the brim, wouldn't accomplish the same thing?** A: It would accomplish the exact same thing...though you are the most industrious win drinker I have ever heard of. This is meant to be a quick and easy way to keep a partially full/empty bottle of preserved in its original bottle.
