Superb Show - Missing 2 Minutes

*by B***S on Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2013*

This was/is truly a great live album with a great capture of the Tubes' theatrical rock & fun. The Tubes milked everything out of themselves and the audience in this show and they laid it down superbly on record. One thing captured especially well was the finale sequence of Stand Up And Shout/White Punks On Dope, which builds slowly to a wonderfully delirious frenzy that left no energy unspent. And, thus, the reason for the reduction by one star on this otherwise 5-star CD release. The CD version, in order to fit onto one CD, cut out about 2 minutes from the LP and about 1 minute of that is out of this final sequence. Now, most of what was cut was audience response between songs and the final fade, something that would never had been missed had it never been captured on LP. But as the rest of the record shows, the between-song energy is part of the show and the full LP version has that extra piece of build-up of excitement to the fantastic finale - so the CD is somewhat a lesser experience than on the LP. Given that it is the only CD release of this great album, I of course have it and still highly recommend it because it still sounds great. I would also love to see any deluxe release of this show that at least could restore the full 2 LP version, but in the meantime, I leave the mp3 of my LP on my player instead of the CD. This may be a nit, but I thought it useful to give at least a heads up since I did not see anyone else make mention of the missing time. It does keep me on the lookout for any restoration of the full original 2LP version.

Tubes - 'What Do You Want From Live' (Universal) 4 1/2 stars

Initially came out as a pricey two-lp vinyl release in 1978. I remember listening to most of this album in record stores that I did frequent - back in the day. It's been so long - but I am relieved to get it on CD reissue. Very nice. Show took place at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in November, 1977. This was, of course The Tubes - in their prime. Tracks that Fee Waybill and crew are primarily known for - are here - performed in their full glory - "Don't Touch Me There" (perhaps their anti-romance anthem?), "Mondo Bondage", the endearing "Smoke (La Vie En Fumer)" and their humorous "White Punks On Dope". But other cuts that (I'm now) remembering are "What Do You Want From Life?", their somewhat memorable crime medley of "Sound Effect - Siren / Theme From Dragnet / Theme From Peter Gunn / Theme From Perry Mason / Theme From The Untouchables", their Beatles cover "I Saw Her Standing There" and the upbeat "Boy Crazy". It's like been so - very long since I've heard this live Tubes album in it's entirety. Most definitely, a should-have. Oh, plus I had completely forgotten about the hero of the day - Quay Lewd.

Great example of a Tubes show!

I saw the Tubes in their heyday back in the mid-70s, and this live album captures exactly what I remember of their concert.
