I am (American) 5'9" with a 34" waist that buy size large in men's pants (36"waist due to athletic build). First I order these pants from another site in a size LARGE. I could not even get them on. Then I ordered XL from this purchase... pants fit like straight leg 34" pants.The size chart conversions are way off. So in a nutshell an American XL is a 40" - 42" waist, but it fits me like an American Medium !
