Before you start drastically increase the (Z) height parameter by at least 3.00mm so you do not crash when you home for the first time. Just a heads up; once you install this upgrade you will need to dial in your retracts and Z-heights. In addition if you have a Ender PLUS like i did you will need to move the end stop sensor to re-obtain the print area. Otherwise reduce the area or you'll otherwise crash. I went a few fancy steps further and made a tube support and kept the filament out sensor off the back side. Added some additional mounts i printed to support this upgrade. Once you get through the install and setup you will be blown away by the stringing and short fills. This does add weight to the gantry so if you are trying to print above 125mm/min it may start to skip steps because of the additional mass. good luck! **Q: Why aren't the screws long enough to fit through the extruder, the spacer and the plate into the motor in step 7? Without the spacer they fit.** A: My screws were long enough to fit. I don't use the spacer, I printed one from Thingiverse, Ender 5 Direct Drive Strain Relief (Enomaker) with Bowden Tube Feeder. **Q: what should the new e-steps be for an ender 5?** A: It doesn’t change you use the same drive parts. There are calibration procedures in the internet if you want to fine tune it. The retract will change you won’t need as much as before. Again you should test it. **Q: Am I supposed to discard the top fitting on the Boden tube? Without it the filament sometimes feeds outside of tube.** A: This is direct drive, the Bowden tube is not really necessary unless you have the roll coming from an area to where the filament is supplied in an extreme angle. Retraction is down to ~3/4 MM but not quite 1.5. Still - NO BAUD TUBE STRESS!!!I held out on the 5 stars for three reasons:1) There're no instructions or advice on where/how to mount the spool on an ender-5 for best results. I had to improvise the old Baud tube to guide the filament from the spool's default position to the new extruder position.2) During installation, the screws were not long enough when using the spacing plate (which lines it up with the hot-end intake), so I left that off and just have a slight bend in the tube going from extruder to hot-end intake. It's not an issue during printing, but does cause some tricky resistance when loading filament. (another thing to note, here, is the length of the servo shaft - the plate also makes this too short and not aligned. I didn't see any set-screw on the servo's stock grabber gear to adjust or replace this either, even though this kit does provide a new grabber gear). The bottom line is, just make sure you don't cut that small amount of baud tube too short.3) I had to move the x-axis sensor a little, which isn't a huge problem, other than the fact that I had to borrow a t-nut screw from the printer's display frame mount. The extruder's old-position t-nut screw didn't provide enough clearance for the sensor wires to clip back in. It would be nice if this kit included a new x-axis t-nut screw that provides this clearance. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat difficult to install but excellent upgrade for the Ender 5. *by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2022* This kit seems to be cobbled together from a couple of different kits and it doesn't quite mesh. I apparently got an updated version of it as the complaints from other people about screws being too short, the fan shroud mounting holes being in the wrong spot, and having no directions have all been addressed. My kit came with a single sheet of paper printed front and back with about 50% of the detail you would want to install the kit. There's still a fair bit of guesswork, but it's better than nothing. Even more importantly it points out which parts come with the kit but aren't used, which is quite a lot.Even with the fixes there are still a few problems with the kit. The first is that the holes for the wheels on the plate were seemingly drilled slightly too close together and now my wheels canter outward slightly. This doesn't seem to affect the print quality and may be intentional, but it doesn't feel good when installing.The second issue is the kit comes with two different lengths of screw for the top left position on the extruder motor (which is also used for the feed tension release lever). Neither length is correct. The shorter screws are too short to reach the stepper motor, and the long screw (which the directions call for you to use) ends up sticking out a couple of mm when bottomed out in the stepper motor. I ended up using a M3x20 from my own stash to assemble the kit.The bottom right screw on the extruder motor also seemed to be a bit too short.The final issue is that in order to install the kit you need to adjust the X stop, but the X stop on my printer was literally screwed into a hole drilled into the frame. It wasn't easily adjustable. However, as part of the install I had removed the extruder motor and filament spool holder from the frame, and both of those are installed with a pair of sliding frame screws. Unfortunately, the frame screws come with gigantic hex heads that interfere with the X stop connector, so I had to take the original screw and cut it down to the length of one of the sliding frame screws to install the X stop.This makes for a pretty hairy install, but once it is in place the print quality is noticeably improved, with my very first print after install being the smoothest benchy I have ever printed. Perhaps more important the direct drive system makes filament changes a breeze. On my old Bowden tube I had to employ Hulk strength to pull the old filament out, which is especially awkward since you had to use one hand to hold the lever down and the other to pull. With the new system the old filament pops out with barely any effort and the mechanism is much easier to see when reinstalling new filament. I am very excited to try some PETG on the new setup, as my printer previously struggled with it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Great little upgrade, missing some important hardware! *by N***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2023* I bought this kit for my Ender 5 Pro which has a Micro Swiss "All Metal Hotend Kit" installed as an aftermarket hot end. It works great now but...The box came in and looked like it had the absolute s*** kicked out of it. Luckily, all the components inside are metal and were undamaged.The instructions were, as I expected, next to useless aside from some good pictures of how it should look.The real problem were the fasteners. All the fasteners in the kit were unlabeled and in weird groupings making everything awkward but manageable. However, the two possible screws for the extruder preloader pivot were both wrong, one was too short and the other too long.I wound up having to use a separate fastener I had lying around (a 3mm x 30mm machine screw) in order to make the kit work.
