Being a Garden Designer, I simply had to have it, however there was the return luggage weight to consider. I took down the book title, ISBN etc and ordered it through Amazon on my return home. Amazon were able to supply 2 other books on tropical garden design which I saw whilst in Barbados. I will use Amazon again to 'bring home' books from my travels in this way. The benefits? No lugging around extra weight on the journey home, books purchased at discount and delivered in a few days. What vegetation that has grudgingly be allowed has been tortured into conformity -AVOID! *by M***T on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 October 2015* This book is hugely disappointing. In fact I have never been as disappointed in a book. For a start it is misnamed, it should be Modernist Hard Landscaping in the Tropics. Many photos have no visible vegetation including two on the cover. To say vegetation is an afterthought is too kind - it seems that vegetation is a huge inconvenience with its irregular shapes in a modernist geometric setting. So where nature is allowed to impinge on concrete it is tortured into conformity as in the checkered carpet-tile pattern of grasses shown in one of the photographs. Mostly we see “gardens” on a large scale for hotel complexes and the like. They are dominated by swimming pools (over 30) and sun-loungers (I gave up counting). Of the 207 pages there is just one page of text on plants. As far as I can see there is nothing on wildlife.All this is completely at odds with my experience of tropical gardens. In the tropics vegetation and wildlife thrives like nowhere else on Earth. A garden should celebrate this by designing and where necessary controlling the elements to achieve a beauty at one with nature, encouraging all the birds, frogs, geckos, fish, insects and even snakes that rightly reside in these regions.
