I expected it to change from a slow ticking to a fast ticking based on proximity to the leak, but the ticking seemed to be fast all the time, and adjusting the thumb-wheel seemed to only make it even faster, not slower. Maybe I was doing something wrong - I don't have prior experience with these kind of detectors. But watching the numbers on the display, along with the red warning light, provided all the information needed.It came with batteries, and the batteries were even pre-installed.
