Review: IT"S Firewire IEEE 1394 - Just wanted to make it really clear on all the negative feedbacks....just because you cam has a DV port, does not mean it will work on your computer....my camera is a sony trv 103 and worked great on my laptop but not on my desktop....this cable is dv to usb [computer], however if you computer dosen't support Firewire IEEE 1394, deep in the bowels of the bios, and if the 1394 is not enabled, then it won't work....my laptop did have support, being an older one, but my desktop being newer did not....hope this helps....

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will this cable go with sony camcorder dcr hc26? i need something that will enable me to transfer from my old school camcorder to my computer.**
A: Hi there,

Please see description I wrote below with regards to connecting a firewire device to a computer:

So, there seems to be a lot of confusion about this cable and what it is capable of and a lot of disgruntled customers because they bought the cable without fully understanding those capabilities.

I just wanted to chip in to give some advice.

Firewire is an old old OLD technology and now pretty much obsolete. USB continues to be used across the board. This means that USB continues to be supported while Firewire is not.

Firewire, or IEEE1394, to give it its official title, is a data transfer interface that was developed by Apple in the 1990s. This means that it has always been far better supported on Apple products than PCs.

Firewire and USB transfer data in completely different ways making them incompatible technologies - a piece of hardware using firewire only cannot be read by USB only computers and vice-versa. Some pieces of technology are dual firewire and USB compatible.

In order for your computer to read a firewire input it has to have a chipset that is capable of doing that or a firewire card. Almost all computers would have had one (or both) of these options 5 or ten years ago, but not any more, and I highly doubt that any PC manufacturers build firewire capability natively into their products any more. Why? Because it is an obsolete technology and almost nobody uses it nowadays. Apple may still, but I cannot find any information about this.

Operating systems can still work with firewire so, if you have the right hardware set-up, you can still use firewire devices.

If you do have an old camera, or anything else, with a firewire output, it is still possible to connect it to a new computer, but the cable may not be the correct tool to do that. The cable will only work if your computer is capable of reading a firewire input. I have an old desktop that has a busted firewire port, and I use the cable to connect a camera and it works fine, but that is because the chipset is capable of reading that input.

If you have a computer that does not have the ability to read a firewire input then you need to search for an alternative solution. This is not the cable's fault - the cable can only operate under a certain (and in this case, fairly limited) set of parameters.

The alternative would be a firewire card. These are fairly inexpensive and easy to connect to a desktop, if you have an available slot.

If you are looking for a laptop solution, I believe (but I am not an expert in this, so you would need to research further) that you could do it through a firewire card and an express card to USB adapter, which would be a fairly inexpensive option BUT, again, I am not an expert in this, so you would need to research further to confirm this is possible.

I hope this is of some help!

I'm not sure if it works for that particular camera but it does not work for anything I tried to plug it into. It would not show any camera is attached or it would show a windows error. Buyer beware. I was useless to me but not worth taking the time to send back. I'll probably cut it into parts and use it for powering a 5 volt device. Or hanging a picture. From what I can tell and from what I have experienced the real way to connect your camera to your mac or PC is to get the Apple connectors that get you to Firewire 800 and then buy an adapter to go from there. They are a little pricey. That's why people will by this cable -- but I found it too good to be true.
