Review: Of Operas and Ballads - Not long ago I saw, bought, and reviewed Sanjay Leela Bhansali's version of Devdas and I immediately resolved to see this version as well, because it defines the story for the previous generation. I'm not going to compare as to which is artistically superior. In my opinion such a comparison simply doesn't work here. Mr. Bhansali's version is Opera, Mr. Roy's version is a ballad, it all depends on personal taste. Personally, I like both. Each has their own unique perfections and flaws. The crowning glory of this film is it's beginning with Paro and Deva as children. Seeing their mischievous tempestuous devotion to each other helps establish their heartbreak as adults. The child actors (and I can't find their names anywhere) are nothing short of utterly brilliant, and astonishingly good-looking as well. It's a joy to watch. Deva is a BRAT with a severe nasty streak, while Paro delights in nearly everything he does with one exception, she will not tolerate that nasty streak turned on *her.* Their vibrancy and innocent passion for life is riveting. There's also a lovely and moving song about a little bird that is the highlight of this film to me. After the years pass the now adult Parvarti and Devdas grow more subdued. I don't want to compare performances in terms of "who's better" because again, we're dealing with two entirely different styles of film. Dilip Kumar is an outstanding actor, he embodies a sweetness and sincerity in his portrayal that makes his Devdas infinitely more pleasant than Mr. Khan's BUT for my taste it made his self-destruction harder to accept. This Devdas, when sober, is entirely too rational! Don't get me wrong, Mr. Kumar never lets the viewer for get his pain, but during his sober scenes I cannot understand why he deliberately chooses self destruction. In Mr. Khan's performance I don't have that issue because his Devdas is never totally rational drunk or sober. So this isn't about a better performance for me, it's about being able to accept the ending! Suchitra Sen's Paro is sweet, demure, and like in Bhansali's version she's the person you feel got the worst end of the stick. That said, she didn't have enough to do in this version and I find it a shame because I really enjoyed her performance. I'll keep an eye-out for more of her films, and hopefully see one that makes use of the potential I see. There is ONE aspect of this movie I am willing to compare as to "who's better" and that's with the character of Chandramuki. Here she is played by, Vyjayantimala. A gloriously beautiful, natural, and genuine actress. Ms. Dixit-Nene eat your heart out! When I first watched Bhansali's, Devdas I really didn't see why so many people thought Chandramuki was the real victim of this tragic love triangle. Now I know. Vyjayantimala's performance was so warm, so real, without any "diva-ness" at all that even I was like... "Okay, seriously Dev why can't you stay sober, be rational, marry her and move on?" It made no sense. I'll admit, Ms. Dixit-Nene's Chandramuki had more to do, and a particularly spectacular scene which she did well; but it simply doesn't compare to Vyjayantimala's genuine affection flowing through her tears. I do have one major issue with this film that caused me to lop off a star. I just couldn't get past the black and white. India is a riot of colors, there were so many outdoor scenes in the beginning that my heart broke seeing everything in shades of grey. I just needed color desperately. This movie is a masterpiece in it's own right, lovingly crafted and a must see. I'll be watching more of Mr. Roy's films eventually. The DVD Quality is good, just keep in mind that the film is a 60yr old print and it does look a little faded in particularly low-lit scenes.
