Personally when I opened the bag I thought the beans smelled awesome. These roasted beans are a bit oily and present a nice crema, and are not bitter in my opinion. Actually I ordered 32 ounces in February '13 and am placing my second order now in July '13. I have 2 - 3 large cappuccinos per week as a nice treat. These have a fair amount of caffeine so be prepared for the morning BUZZ to jolt you to action. Prepare for take off! Yes, these are not the very best espresso beans you can buy. If you want to spend 60% -80% more for a better bean, sure go for it. I am not a coffee snob and don't need to impress anyone and have had good espresso on four continents from a variety of methods and these are 'very good'. On a scale of 1 to 5 for value I give them a 5. Based on other Amazon prices or going to Rogers Coffee direct this is a solid deal. On a scale of 1 to 5 on taste they are a solid 4. Way better than Starbucks IF you like a solid espresso flavor that is not bitter, but medium strong, nice finish.
