Detailed view of the Air War over Germany

*by R***F on Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2012*

This book is a highly detailed, comprehensive narrative of the Eighth Air Force's Mission 376 of May 28, 1944, when over 1,000 B-17's and B-24's, along with hundreds of escort fighters, bombed a number of targets, mainly synthetic oil refineries, deep in Germany. It was also the first attempt to glide bomb a target, in this case, the marshalling yards in Cologne, which turned out to be a dismal failure, despite no aircraft losses. The author, who obviously conducted detailed research from may sources, describes the mission from beginning to end, as well as the aftermath , as it pertained to casualties, POW's, and a few atrocities perpetrated on downed fliers.I have read a number of books on this subject, but still found this work very interesting, and illuminating, especially regarding the high number of aircraft aborts, which must have occurred on every mission, and the difficulties in assembling such large numbers of heavy laden aircraft, prior to heading for the targets.long with the author's narrative, the book contains extensive, and exciting accounts from aircrew and pilots from both the USAAF and the Luftwaffe. Also included are extensive lists of aircraft shot down, with full crew details, along with fighters shot down on both sides. For anyone who would like a valuable insight into the Air War over Europe at it's peak, I highly recommend this book.

If you have a relative who was a WW2 bomber or fighter crew, one of these series might be great for you.

*by B***L on Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2018*

Basically a boring book but I bought it becuse it tells details of the bombing mission my dad was on in WW2. After the war he would never talk about it. There is a picture of him with his fellow officers in front of their bomber just before the mission which ended with them being shot down. They all lived but spend the rest of the war in a German prison camp. I learned more about his life in the war than I did in a lifetime of living with him.

    Info on my father

*by J***. on Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2017*

This book has given me information about my father and his time in WWII. He was a pilot and never spoke much about his time in war and getting info on him. This book speaks about the 351st Bomb Group and some of the missions he was in.
